Chatham Community Library will host a El Día de los Muertos – Day of the Dead celebration on Saturday, November 3, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm in the Holmes Meeting Room.

The Library’s celebration begins with a presentation on the history of the holiday. Sharon Mujica, former Director of the Yucatec Maya Program at the Institute for the Study of the Americas at UNC-Chapel Hill will speak about the cultural significance of Día de los Muertos and how the observance has taken root in the United States. Mexican artist Jesús Pastor will lead a workshop on creating collage and sugar skulls.

In collaboration with the Artist Studio Project, Chilean composer and

storyteller Carlos Antonio Salvo will perform original compositions. Salvo’s music transposes the neocolonialism of the Americas by setting social realities to lyrics and harmonies; the essence of the international New Song Movement.

Traditional dance from Latin and South America will be performed by the Lee County Magetsi 4-H Club.

Other activities include bi-lingual storytelling, crafts, and face painting. A large ofrenda will be displayed on which attendees are welcome to place items of their own to remember their loved ones. The ofrenda, when created in part by the community, becomes a symbol that people from all cultures can identify with. Traditional foods and beverages will also be available.

La Biblioteca Comunitaria de Chatham celebrará El Día de los Muertos – Day of The Dead, el sábado 3 de noviembre, de 11:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m. en la sala de reuniones Holmes.

La celebración de la biblioteca comienza con una presentación sobre la historia de El dia de Muertos. Sharon Mujica, ex directora del Programa Maya Yucateco en el Instituto para el Estudio de las Américas en UNC-Chapel Hill, hablará sobre la importancia cultural del Día de los Muertos y sobre cómo se ha arraigado la observancia en los Estados Unidos. El artista mexicano Jesús Pastor dirigirá un taller sobre la creación de collage y calaveras de azúcar.

En colaboración con el Artist Studio Project, el compositor y narrador chileno Carlos Antonio Salvo interpretará composiciones originales. La música de Salvo transpone el neocolonialismo de las Américas al configurar las realidades sociales con letras y armonías; La esencia del movimiento internacional New Song. La danza tradicional de América Latina y América del Sur será interpretada por el Lee County Magetsi 4-H Club.

Otras actividades incluyen narración bilingüe, manualidades y pintura de caras. Se mostrará un altar en la que los asistentes podrán colocar sus propios artículos para recordar a sus seres queridos. La ofrenda, cuando es creada en parte por la comunidad, se convierte en un símbolo con el que las personas de todas las culturas pueden identificarse. Comidas y bebidas tradicionales también estarán disponibles.
