December 14th from 1-3pm at The City of Raleigh Museum located at 220 Fayetteville St. Downtown Raleigh NC 27601.
This is a Free Bilingual Family Friendly, Holiday Storytime Event.
It includes: Free Books, Crafts, Chocolates, Songs, and Treats, Hot Chocolate, Pastries and more.
This family-friendly event forms part of the 11th Annual El Quixote Festival.
This year we will have children performing:
- Ana Jimena will delight us with holiday songs
- David and Victoria Garrett will treat us to holiday favorites with their string instruments.
- The Dominican Folkloric Dance Group will dance to get us in the spirit.
- And Local Children Authors will join us to sign their books.
About: Luisito’s Chocolatada – A Community Collaboratory Dedicated to Bilingual Literacy
La Chocolatada de Luisito is a 9-year annual tradition built on an unwavering belief in the power of bilingual literacy and cultural representation. It is a genuine Collaboratory—an event that receives no direct federal funding and thrives entirely through the dedication of countless community members, authors, and organizations who believe in its mission.
The Spark: A Personal and Cultural Beginning
The event originates from a holiday story written by founder Rafael A. Osuba in the early 2000s to share the Three Kings’ Day (Día de Reyes) tradition with his children. This personal passion led him to organize the first Three Kings’ Day celebration in Cary, NC, in 2005 when he volunteered at a different organization (an event which he is proud they continue today). The story later helped to spark the formation of ASP Books.
In late 2016, ASP Books published that story, Luisito Celebrates Three Kings’ Day – Luisito Celebra El Dia De Los Reyes. The first Luisito books were innovative, unbound sheets designed for hands-on programming. To make this possible, a small, wooden book-binding machine was built by Rafael and his father, Jaime.
A Cultural Legacy: That very same hand-made book-binding machine, along with copies of the first unbound edition, now forms part of the permanent collection at the National Museum of the American Latino at the Smithsonian.
The Original Vision and the Evolution
The first La Chocolatada de Luisito was organized by Rafael A. Osuba and Miguel Rojas Sotelo and held in January 2017 at a public location, Cocoa Cinnamon in Durham. This inaugural event realized a pure, inclusive vision: a diverse community literary event focused solely on sharing culture and literacy, featuring: Hot Chocolate, Delicious Treats, Reading the Story, Making Holiday Crafts, and Gifting FREE Bilingual Books only.
As the event grew exponentially, community partners such as El Centro Hispano and the Dominican Association of North Carolina (ADORA) joined the effort. Both organizations continue to be strong supporters and collaborators. The event was also strategically moved from January to December in subsequent years so the community could use it to prepare for and educate themselves about the traditional Día de Reyes celebration on January 5th and 6th. As attendance increased, toy and food drives were naturally added with the hope that, by drawing more families, we could more widely share our mission of literacy and books and respond to the Latino community’s expanding needs. Over time, however, the toys and food became the primary reason many people attended, and the literacy and books component was often overlooked. While the event appeared successful in numbers, it was no longer fully aligned with our intended mission. It also risked defining La Chocolatada de Luisito only as a Latino charity event, rather than the intentionally diverse, multicultural literary celebration it was always meant to be.
Re-aligning with the Core Mission
After navigating years of successful growth, including the transition to a necessary drive-through event that continued for two years during the COVID pandemic (4th and 5th Annuals), the founder made the strategic decision to redirect the event for its 6th year.
To bring the focus back to its original vision, it was moved to the City of Raleigh Museum, a more suitable neutral public space. This move secured invaluable support from collaborators like The Friends of the City of Raleigh Museum, Wake County Public Libraries, and The Wake Up and Read Program. The event was strictly re-focused to be a pure Literary Event dedicated solely to gifting free bilingual books to children aged 0–12.
Our Continued Commitment
We are firmly committed to a mission that is not about momentary entertainment, but about providing children with the tools of literacy and the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the books and authors they encounter—a trajectory-changing path that only books can offer. We understood from the beginning that this would be a struggle: free toys and food are often more immediately attractive than books, and this reality has at times caused a dip in attendance.
ASP Books is committed to amplifying diverse voices and has published books written by child authors.
To fund the book giveaway, Rafael and his wife Michelle put their own money and time into the Limbers para Libros campaign, creating and selling Icy Puerto Rican Treats throughout the summer months to fundraise for this annual event.
La Chocolatada de Luisito is truly a collaborative event that is blessed annually by the generous contributions of time, talent, and treasure from many. The founder understands, recognizes, and reminds us that we do nothing alone, and if we want to live in a great community, we must all be active participants in making it a better place. He is very thankful to all that continue to work with him to provide these places, spaces, and platforms to share cultural experiences and the joy of reading. “One of the greatest gifts you can give a person is a book,” a truth Rafael is living proof of.

Un Colaboratorio Comunitario Dedicado a la Alfabetización Bilingüe
La Chocolatada de Luisito es una tradición anual de 9 años construida sobre una fe inquebrantable en el poder de la alfabetización bilingüe y la representación cultural. Es un auténtico Colaboratorio—un evento que no recibe financiación federal directa y que prospera enteramente gracias a la dedicación de innumerables miembros de la comunidad, autores y organizaciones que creen en su misión.
La Chispa: Un Comienzo Personal y Cultural
El evento se origina en una historia navideña escrita por el fundador Rafael A. Osuba a principios de la década de 2000 para compartir la tradición del Día de Reyes con sus hijos. La Visión Original y la Evolución

Con el aumento en la asistencia, se añadieron de forma natural colectas de juguetes y alimentos con la esperanza de que, al atraer a más familias, pudiéramos compartir más ampliamente nuestra misión de alfabetización y libros y responder a las crecientes necesidades de la comunidad latina. Con el tiempo, sin embargo, para muchas personas los juguetes y los alimentos se convirtieron en el motivo principal para asistir, y la parte de lectura y libros quedó con frecuencia en un segundo plano. Aunque las cifras parecían un éxito, el evento ya no estaba plenamente alineado con nuestra misión original. Además, corríamos el riesgo de que La Chocolatada de Luisito se percibiera únicamente como un evento latino de ayuda con juguetes y comida, cuando desde su origen ha sido concebido como una celebración literaria diversa y multicultural.
Re-alineando con la Misión Central
Después de navegar años de crecimiento exitoso, incluyendo la transición a un necesario evento con servicio en coche (drive-through) que continuó durante dos años durante la pandemia de COVID (4.ª y 5.ª Edición Anual), el fundador tomó la decisión estratégica de redirigir el evento para su 6.º año.
Para devolver el enfoque a su visión original, el evento se trasladó al City of Raleigh Museum, un espacio público neutral más adecuado. Este cambio aseguró un apoyo invaluable de colaboradores como The Friends of the City of Raleigh Museum, Wake County Public Libraries y The Wake Up and Read Program. El evento fue estrictamente re-enfocado para ser un Evento Puramente Literario dedicado únicamente a regalar libros bilingües gratuitos a niños de 0 a 12 años.
Nuestro Compromiso Continuo
Estamos firmemente comprometidos con una misión que no se trata de ofrecer un entretenimiento momentáneo, sino de brindar a los niños las herramientas de la alfabetización y la oportunidad de verse reflejados en los libros y en los autores que conocen—un camino capaz de cambiar su trayectoria de vida de una manera en que solo los libros pueden hacerlo. Desde el principio supimos que sería una lucha: los juguetes y la comida gratuitos suelen resultar más atractivos de inmediato que los libros, y esta realidad en ocasiones ha provocado una baja en la asistencia.
ASP Books está comprometido a amplificar voces diversas y ha publicado libros escritos por autores infantiles.
Para financiar el regalo de libros, Rafael y su esposa Michelle invierten su propio dinero y tiempo en la campaña Limbers para Libros, creando y vendiendo Golosinas Puertorriqueñas Congeladas (Icy Puerto Rican Treats) durante los meses de verano para recaudar fondos para este evento anual.
La Chocolatada de Luisito es verdaderamente un evento colaborativo que es bendecido anualmente por las generosas contribuciones de tiempo, talento y tesoro de muchos. El fundador comprende, reconoce y nos recuerda que no hacemos nada solos, y si queremos vivir en una gran comunidad, todos debemos ser participantes activos para hacer de ella un lugar mejor.
