Nico Says:In the beginning, I aimed to depict the perpetually changing direction of my home country – Colombia – a country where in the 90’s, car bombs and kidnappings were the leading headlines on the news;  it was the norm. I was filled with haunting and also very beautiful images of my country’s landscape and my art practice became my escape.  Today, I paint as a means of describing a childhood where the violence of that time and the people that were directly & indirectly affected revolved in such a way that it created this menagerie of ‘normal’.  As an immigrant to the US, I became starkly aware of the transaction between two ‘allied’ countries and my encounters in this place that we had always referred to as the “American Dream.”  Throughout my art practice, I aim to illustrate ‘snapshots’ of a peripatetic lifestyle that is focused on survival of the time – my own and of those I encounter along the way. Creating portraits of others who have defied the odds and were infamous & famous in one life time often takes over my canvasses as well.  My work is full of unapologetic color and is a direct product of my expressed energy – meaning there are no sketches or previous drawings. I work solely from “in-the-moment” energy and I transfer what I see and feel onto the canvas. The rawness of my work exemplifies how my realities were never picture-perfect and so the images I render are not either.

Nico dice: En un principio, traté de representar la dirección cambiante de mi país de origen – Colombia – un país donde en los años 90, los coches bomba y los secuestros fueron los principales titulares en las noticias; Era la norma. Yo estaba lleno de imágenes inquietantes y también muy hermosas del paisaje de mi país y mi práctica artística se convirtió en mi escape. Hoy pinto como un medio para describir una infancia en la que la violencia de ese tiempo y las personas que fueron afectadas directa e indirectamente revolvieron de tal manera que creó este conjunto de “normales”. Como inmigrante a los Estados Unidos, me di cuenta de la transacción entre dos países “aliados” y de mis encuentros en este lugar que siempre habíamos denominado “Sueño Americano”. A lo largo de mi práctica artística, mi objetivo es ilustrar “instantáneas ‘De un estilo de vida peripatético que se centra en la supervivencia del tiempo – el mío y el de los que encuentro en el camino. Creación de retratos de otros que han desafiado las probabilidades y eran infames y famosos en un tiempo de vida a menudo se hace cargo de mis lienzos también. Mi trabajo está lleno de color sin confusión y es un producto directo de mi energía expresada – lo que significa que no hay bocetos o dibujos anteriores. Trabajo únicamente a partir de la energía “en el momento” y transfiero lo que veo y siento en el lienzo. La crudeza de mi trabajo ejemplifica cómo mis realidades nunca fueron perfectas y por lo tanto las imágenes que presento no son tampoco.
