Saba Taj is an interdisciplinary artist and activist based in Durham, North Carolina. A queer Muslim raised in the American South, Taj explores identity and power through mixed media collage, painting, sewing, and performance. She earned a Masters in Fine Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a coordinator of the Durham Artists Movement.

Saba Taj es una artista y activista interdisciplinario basado en Durham, Carolina del Norte. Una musulmána Queer criada en el sur de América, Taj explora la identidad y el poder a través de collage de medios mixtos, pintura, costura y rendimiento. Obtuvo una Maestría en Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill y es coordinadora del Durham Artists Movement (El Movimiento de Artistas en Durham).
About the work:
Drawing inspiration from Islamic stories, theories of hybridity, and afro futurism, Saba Taj imagines the deviant beauty of the apocalypse. Through mixed media collage, liminalities of identity and home are dreamed into chimerical allegories. Fragmented clippings from popular magazines selling stereotyped notions of the “exotic other” recombine into formidable hybrid creatures. These reincarnations act as warriors and survivors in a violently shifting futurist landscape, marking the end of one world, and the birth of another.

Inspirándose en historias islámicas, teorías de la hibridación y afro futurismo, Saba Taj imagina la belleza desviada del apocalipsis. Mediante el collage de medios mixtos, las liminalidades de la identidad y el hogar se sueñan en alegorías quiméricas. Los fragmentos fragmentados de revistas populares que venden nociones estereotipadas del “otro exótico” se re-combinan en formidables criaturas híbridas. Estas reencarnaciones actúan como guerreros y supervivientes en un paisaje futurista que cambia violentamente, marcando el fin de un mundo y el nacimiento de otro.
