A MESSAGE FROM THE ELDERS. Nearly 80% of the terrestrial ecoregions are inhabited and protected by one or more Indigenous peoples. The Indigenous peoples of the Americas are the peoples who are native to the Americas or the Western Hemisphere. Their ancestors are among the pre-Columbian populations of South, Central, and North America, as well as the Caribbean. Indigenous peoples live throughout the continent. While often minorities in their countries, Indigenous peoples are the majority in Greenland and close to a majority in Bolivia and Guatemala. There were approximately 14 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S., accounting for 3.3% of the population in 2014. This population included individuals, many Indigenous, who escaped from violence, disasters, and economic stagnation in their countries and entered at times without documentation, and others overstayed their permits.

Some 8.3 million undocumented immigrants work in the economy, or 5.2 percent of the workforce. They work in multiple sectors, including construction (1.5 million), restaurants (1 million), agriculture and farms (320,000), landscaping (300,000), and food processing and manufacturing (200,000), among other occupations. Almost half of the foreign-born workforce is Hispanic. As these realities are caught in controversy, they are also caught on camera.

The 2025 NCLAFF would examine multiple stories of these minorities, who are at the center of much debate today.  Minority stories that speak loudly to the majority that benefits from the environmental services and conservation of the diversity of the planet, and from the labor that sustains the threads of life on this part of the planet. Here is their message.

“The life of Cervantes 1547 – 1616”
A traveling library exhibit

Composed of 15 panels that collect drawings from the book “Cervantes, la ensoñación de un genio” (Cervantes, the dream of a genius) this exhibit was created by the cartoonist, playwright and actor Miguel Gómez Andrea, known as Gol. The exhibition forms part of the tenth annual El Quixote Festival.

The exhibition narrates the life of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra as a biography-comic. The exhibit aims to immerse the observer in Cervantes’ process of creating his immortal Don Quixote de la Mancha.

In addition to explore the motivations and the circumstances that led him to give life to this eternal gentleman.

Just like Don Quixote went on adventures, we take the exhibit on a journey across the Wake County regional libraries of North Carolina.

Why a graphic novel?

Our goal is to inspire communities to learn more about exciting topics and to read more.  Graphic novels have been proven to improve reading skills like any other book would.  Packed with rich plots, complex storylines, and captivating visual elements, graphic novels have a unique appeal to readers — and when people find books they are interested in, they are more likely to read.

By providing access to engaging topics across a variety of formats, young readers are more likely to build strong reading habits. Frequent readers have an average of 139 books in their homes compared to 74 books for infrequent readers. Graphic novels are a great addition to any home library, as they powerfully motivate both avid and reluctant readers by igniting their imaginations and sparking creativity in new, exciting ways.

Graphic Novels are also a great tool for readers learning a new language.

It is our hope that viewers of this exhibit will be inspired to learn more about Cervantes and his Masterpiece Don Quixote De La Mancha.

The artist

Gol (Miguel Gómez Andrea, 1960) is a cartoonist, playwright and actor. In his youth he studied nautical studies and spent four years at sea as a Merchant Navy Pilot. After a long trip to India and the birth of his children, he left the city and the sea to settle in the Sierra de Gredos. He made a living as a miniature decorator until he found a place in the professional world of theater and comics.

Since 1993 he has directed Estudio La Recua S.L. specialized in historical dissemination through the artistic medium, mainly theater and comics. For eight years he played Sancho Panza in the show Delirio de Don Quijote y Sancho Panza, which allowed him to get to know Cervantes and his work in depth. He has published more than 40 historical comic titles for institutions and independent publishers, in addition to several historical popular books on a wide variety of topics. He has also written and performed several plays throughout the national territory.

39TH ANNUAL NCLAFF

October 7-26, 2024

The Western film genre is set in the American frontier and is commonly associated with folk tales of the Western United States, Northern Mexico, and Western Canada. For the 2024 NCLAFF, this genre moves south to Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. The West arrived (as a colonial power) and stayed later in the form of the republican consolidation of modern Latin America in the 19th and 20th centuries.

In many of this year’s selections, a sort of audiovisual “Wild West” with gender undertones reminds us how hostile spaces, sparsely populated, were (and still are) victims of hired gunslinger characters that came to pacify the Indigenous menace to development. Western narratives of progress are seen in many of the films as an attempt to tame territories rich in natural resources at the expense of the communities that inhabited them.

Several films will feature an accompanying short from the 68 voces, 68 corazones (68 Voices, 68 Hearts) project, founded and directed by Gabriela Badillo. The non-profit project attempts to portray the 68 Indigenous linguistic groups of Mexico in animations of traditional stories and folklore. Badillo will give workshops in Durham and at Duke University in November.
