Monica Weber
My own wandering artistic trajectory echoes a constant element of change, and my creative driving-force is the incessant exploration of new media, styles and techniques with, in later years, a sporadic progression towards abstract expression and larger formats. For decades I agonized over my urge to jump back and forth between figurative depiction and abstraction (my personal ambivalence between reality and perception), and between vastly divergent styles, media and formats, convinced that to achieve recognition I had to restrict myself to a distinctive and permanent style (sacrificing, as it were, temerity to propriety.) However, having failed, after three decades, to resist the urge to constantly move on and explore new creative possibilities, I decided to embrace eclecticism as my style, in spite of the inherent conceptual oxymoron of an unpredictable style. During the first two decades my work evolved from figurative ink and charcoal drawing to oil and acrylics. Having spent the first half of my life in Mexico, most of my early paintings are strongly influenced by Mexico’s people, colors and light. Although I painted many a landscape, the human element is prevalent in my early work, which consists mostly of figurative human studies, descriptive Mexican scenes and private portrait commissions.
In 2005 my style and medium underwent a drastic and serendipitous expansion into mosaic, particularly in large-scale public art. My mosaic installations, totaling approximately 1000 square feet of mosaic surface, can be viewed at Summit School in Winston-Salem, where I completed two mosaic benches and a playground installation, and in Clemmons Elementary School, where my Coral Reef Planters and three amphitheater benches represent Australia and Latin America in the School’s Global Garden. In 2013 I returned to the easel, moving on to abstract acrylics and mixed media pieces, and in 2014 I started working on sculpture and bas-relief, both abstract and figurative and in traditional as well as non-traditional media.
Apart from creating art, I thoroughly enjoy conveying the joy of creation to children and adults alike and offers workshops in mosaic, Huichol-inspired yarn art and other styles and media to schools and private groups.

Mi propia trayectoria artística errante hace eco de un elemento constante de cambio, y mi fuerza motriz creativa es la exploración incesante de nuevos medios, estilos y técnicas con, en años posteriores, una progresión esporádica hacia la expresión abstracta y formatos más grandes. Durante décadas me agonizaba por mi necesidad de saltar entre la representación figurativa y la abstracción (mi ambivalencia personal entre la realidad y la percepción) y entre estilos, medios y formatos enormemente divergentes, convencida de que para lograr el reconocimiento debía restringirme a un estilo distintivo y el estilo permanente (sacrificando, por así decirlo, la temeridad a la propiedad). Sin embargo, después de tres décadas de fracasar para resistir el impulso de seguir adelante y explorar nuevas posibilidades creativas, decidí aceptar el eclecticismo como mi estilo, a pesar de el oxímoron conceptual inherente de un estilo impredecible. Durante las dos primeras décadas mi trabajo evolucionó de tinta figurativa y dibujo de carbón a petróleo y acrílicos. Después de pasar la primera mitad de mi vida en México, la mayoría de mis primeros cuadros están fuertemente influenciados por la gente, los colores y la luz de México. Aunque he pintado muchos paisajes, el elemento humano es predominante en mi trabajo inicial, que consiste principalmente en estudios humanos figurativos, escenas descriptivas mexicanas y comisiones de retrato privado.
En 2005 mi estilo y medio sufrió una expansión drástica y serendipitous en el mosaico, particularmente en arte público a gran escala. Mis instalaciones de mosaico, que totalizan aproximadamente 1000 pies cuadrados de superficie de mosaico, se pueden ver en la Escuela Summit en Winston-Salem, donde terminé dos bancos de mosaico y una instalación de patio de recreo, y en la Escuela Primaria Clemmons, donde mi Coral Reef Plantters y tres bancos de anfiteatro representan a Australia y América Latina en el Jardín Global de la Escuela. En 2013 volví al caballete, pasando a acrílicos abstractos y piezas de medios mixtos, y en 2014 empecé a trabajar en la escultura y el bajorrelieve, tanto abstracto como figurativo y en medios tradicionales y no tradicionales.
Aparte de crear arte, disfruto de transmitir la alegría de la creación a niños y adultos por igual y ofrece talleres en mosaico, huichol de hilo de inspiración de arte y otros estilos y medios de comunicación a las escuelas y grupos privados.
Socorro Hernandez-Hinek
A variety of cultural influences and experiences have inspired my artistic journey. Growing up as a Mexican-American, amongst a family of talented, driven musicians, “musicos”, has directed me from birth. These familial cultural and social structures intermixed with a fierce creative passion forged the value structure of my family. Their life journey set into motion my own personal evolution as a woman, a mother and artist.
Today, my body of work centers around my familial experience creating altars and personal shrines inspired by my Mexican heritage, customs and personal experiences – “Altares de familia”.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, I have received master’s degrees in studio ceramics from Chico State University, California and in North Carolina – East Carolina University, Greenville. I moved to North Carolina in 1996. Today, I am a tenured Professor of Art at Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, North Carolina. It has been… and continues to be….a remarkable journey.
My experience includes museum education, arts training, resource development and grant writing. I have received numerous awards and acknowledgements in grant writing for the visual arts and in the field of art education. I have traveled throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America to view and study museum collection and continue to exhibit widely and have works largely in private collections.
I am actively involved in presenting lectures, workshops, and attend professional conferences. I have served on the Board of the Fayetteville Cumberland Arts Council, and am a member of NCECA. Today, I have served as an advisory member on the Board of the State Arts Council and the N.C. Art Museum Educators Expo Committee for Cumberland County. I have enjoyed serving on the Grants, Membership and Public Art Committees for our local Arts Council as well as the University. As Associate Professor, in the Performing and Fine Arts department teaching courses in drawing, ceramics, figure drawing, sculpture, art history.

Una variedad de influencias culturales y experiencias han inspirado mi viaje artístico. Crecer como mexicana-americana, entre una familia de músicos talentosos, me ha dirigido desde el nacimiento. Estas estructuras culturales y sociales familiares mezcladas con una pasión creativa feroz forjaron la estructura de valor de mi familia. Su trayectoria de vida puso en movimiento mi propia evolución personal como mujer, madre y artista.
Hoy en día, mi trabajo se centra en mi experiencia familiar creando altares y santuarios personales inspirados en mi herencia mexicana, costumbres y experiencias personales – “Altares de familia”.
Nací en San Antonio, Texas, he recibido maestrías en cerámica de estudio de Chico State University, California y en Carolina del Norte – East Carolina University, Greenville. Me mudé a Carolina del Norte en 1996. Hoy en día, soy profesor titular de Arte en Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, Carolina del Norte. Ha sido … y sigue siendo …. un viaje notable.
Mi experiencia incluye educación en museos, capacitación en artes, desarrollo de recursos y escritura de becas. He recibido numerosos premios y reconocimientos en la redacción de becas para las artes visuales y en el campo de la educación artística. He viajado por los Estados Unidos, Europa y América Latina para ver y estudiar la colección de museos y seguir exhibiendo ampliamente y tienen obras en gran medida en colecciones privadas.
Estoy participando activamente en la presentación de conferencias, talleres y asistir a conferencias profesionales. He servido en el Consejo de Fayetteville Cumberland Arts Council, y soy miembro de NCECA. Hoy he servido como miembro asesor en la Junta del Consejo de Artes del Estado y el Comité de Exposición de Educadores del Museo de Arte de Carolina del Norte para el Condado de Cumberland. He disfrutado sirviendo en los Comités de Subvenciones, Membresía y Arte Público para nuestro Consejo de Artes local, así como la Universidad. Como Profesor Asociado, en el departamento de Artes Escénicas y Bellas Artes imparte cursos de dibujo, cerámica, dibujo de figuras, escultura, historia del arte.
Leticia Alvarez
Leticia Alvarez is a Mexican artist; studied a Degree in Art at the University of Monterrey (UDEM), and has participated in numerous exhibitions. Leticia received her Master’s Degree in Education through Art from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UNAL). He married David Elizondo and moved to the United States where he received a scholarship to study the Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies, History and Literature. His love for Mexico and its roots have been represented in his art with different motives, first the traditional Mexican toys, crafts and religious images were used to evoke the culture, traditions and memory they represent. In the series “Casas”, the artist wants to share her impressions of Mexico, almost seen with the eyes of a foreigner; the over population, the urban landscape, are transformed into art that is sometimes represented with color and joy, sometimes with fire or cold, but always with the nostalgia of Mexico that has left behind. In the last series that she is currently working on, the artist represents situations that we live in the world today, moments that we have witnessed in this part of the history that we have lived. Leticia Alvarez realizes that she is not only an artist, she is also Mexican, she is also a daughter, sister, wife, mother, who lives in a world where social networks allow us to obtain instant information about what is happening everywhere. And this is how the need arises to represent the artist’s vision in these subjects, the works shown here belong to this series: Malala, the brave Pakistani girl who fights for women’s rights, or In the Border, the children who are alone at the border, where their future is uncertain.
The artist lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband David Elizondo and her four children, and enjoys teaching art to children in her studio.

Leticia Alvarez es una artista Mexicana; estudio Licenciatura en Arte en la Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), y ha participado en numerosas exposiciones. Leticia obtuvo su Maestría en Educación a través del Arte de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UNAL). Se caso con David Elizondo y cambio su residencia a Estados Unidos, en donde obtuvo una beca para estudiar la Maestría en Estudios Latinoamericanos, Historia y Literatura. Su amor por México y sus raíces, han sido representados en su arte con diferentes motivos, primero los juguetes Mexicanos tradicionales, artesanías e imágenes religiosas fueron utilizados para evocar la cultura, tradiciones y memoria que representan. En la serie “Casas”, la artista quiere compartir sus impresiones de México, casi visto con los ojos de un extranjero; la sobre populación, el paisaje urbano, se transforman en arte que a veces es representado con color y alegría, otras veces con fuego o frio, pero siempre con la nostalgia del México que se ha dejado atrás. En la última serie que actualmente trabaja, la artista representa situaciones que vivimos en el mundo actual, momentos que hemos sido testigos en esta parte de la historia que nos ha tocado vivir. Leticia Alvarez se da cuenta que no solo es una artista, mexicana, es también, hija, hermana, esposa, madre, que vive en un mundo en el cual las redes sociales nos permiten obtener información instantánea de lo que sucede en todas partes. Y es así como surge la necesidad de representar la visión de la artista en estos temas, las obras que aquí se muestran pertenecen a esta serie: Malala, la valiente niña Paquistaní que lucha por los derechos de las mujeres, o In the Border, los niños que se encuentran solos en la frontera, en donde su futuro se presenta incierto.
La artista vive en Raleigh, NC con su esposo David Elizondo y sus cuatro hijos, y disfruta dando clases de arte a niños en su estudio.

Cornelio Campos paintings include expressive narratives of his beloved hometown of Cheran, in the state of Michoacan in central Mexico, and of his immigrant experiences in the US. “ My paintings are inspired by the nostalgia I have for my hometown of Cheran, Mexico my family and the customs that I grew up with.. I also believe my paintings are a tool for sharing my indigenous/Spanish background and offering and teaching lessons for the people in the United States.

Las pinturas de Cornelio Campos incluyen narraciones expresivas de su querida ciudad natal de Cherán, en el estado de Michoacán, en el centro de México, y de sus experiencias de inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. “Mis pinturas están inspiradas por la nostalgia que tengo para mi ciudad natal de Cherán, México, mi familia y las costumbres con las que crecí. También creo que mis pinturas son una herramienta para compartir mi fondo indígena / español y ofrecer y enseñar lecciones para la gente en los Estados Unidos.

Rafael A. Osuba
Osuba (Puerto Rican) cultural producer, visual artist, storyteller, arts advocate and self proclaimed Quixote, has been an artist for as long as he can remember. He learned at a very young age that through his talent he could engage people and create relationships. He says “Art is all around us; it is up to us to see its beauty.” Art is the vehicle he uses to stay connected to his culture. “Every person, drawing, painting, sculpture, song, dance, food and literary work has a story behind it. Capturing a feeling, a memory or expression and sharing it with the world is where the magic lies.”
Osuba has effectively used his creativity to build businesses and to help others be successful in what they do. He has been an art advocate in North Carolina for over 25 years and has pioneered many projects that have helped to further the Latino Art movement. He has served on numerous boards and volunteers in numerous community events.
He is recognized as the first to produce commercial Spanish television in North Carolina, with his social issues program “Vamos a Conversar” a 90 minute Live call-in television program reaching over 800,000 homes each week. (52 programs in total) He has produced numerous visual art exhibits including the first and only to date traveling visual art exhibit entitled “Raices – Roots”, viewed by an estimated 60,000 people across ten cities in North Carolina.
He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Artist Studio Project, and creator of the El Quixote Festival, a seven month long collaborative festival commemorating Spanish author and literary giant, Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra and 400 years of “Don Quixote”. Now preparing for its third year, the First Annual Festival was very successful spanning 10 cities across North Carolina reaching an estimated 50,000 people and filled with over 150 days of programming, with most of the events free and open to the general public. An aggressive outreach program with, numerous educational events and workshops at all levels, elementary, middle school, high school, community colleges, and universities, to include theatre, international musical concerts, statewide visual arts exhibit, renowned award winning scholars, international theatrical performances, literary gatherings with published authors, blockbuster award winning international films, global conferences on Romance Languages to include round table discussions about El Quixote with numerous lectures and culinary events. The Festival culminated with the first and largest multilingual Live Don Quixote Marathon reading spanning over 5 days that included 8 major North Carolina Universities, and CastiLa (CENTRO INTERNACIONAL DE ESTUDIOS HISPÁNICOS) in Grenada Spain. The live traveling marathon had over 500 lectors reading Don Quixote I and II in 18 languages.
His New Dual Language Christmas Children’s Book Focuses on Celebrating Three Kings’ Day and was published in January of 2017 “Luisito Celebrates Three Kings’ Day, Luisito Celebra El Dia De Los Reyes Magos” , (ISBN-10: 0998174904, ISBN-13: 978-0998174907) one of the few illustrated dual language (English, Spanish) books in the market today focusing on Celebrating Three Kings’ Day. Illustrated by “Gol” (Miguel Gómez Andrea, 1960) a Spanish cartoonist, playwright and actor the book was published by ASP BOOKS.
He lives in Raleigh North Carolina with his wife, best friend and “Muse” of over 30 years Michelle and identifies their three children Rafael Jr, Gabrielle and Leilani as his most important works of art!

RAFAEL A. OSUBA, Biografía – (1967)
Osuba (Puertorriqueño) productor cultural, artista visual, narrador, defensor de las artes y auto proclamado Quijote, ha sido un artista toda su vida. Aprendió a una edad muy joven que a través de su talento podría involucrar a la gente y crear relaciones. Él dice: “El arte esta al todo alrededor, depende de nosotros ver su belleza.” El arte es el vehículo que el utiliza para mantenerse en contacto con su cultura. “Toda persona, dibujo, pintura, escultura, canto, danza, comida y obra literaria tiene una historia detrás. Poder capturar un sentimiento, un recuerdo o expresión y compartirlo con el mundo es donde radica la magia. “Osuba ha utilizado eficazmente su creatividad para crear empresas y para ayudar a otros a tener éxito en lo que hacen.
Un defensor del arte en Carolina del Norte durante más de 25 años, ha sido pionero en muchos proyectos que han ayudado a impulsar el movimiento del Arte Latino. Miembro de numerosas juntas, continúa ser voluntario en numerosos eventos de la comunidad.
Es reconocido como el primero en producir televisión español comercial en Carolina del Norte, con su programa de asuntos sociales de 90 minutos en vivo “Vamos A Conversar “que recibía llamadas en vivo alcanzando a más de 800.000 hogares cada semana. (52 programas en total) Ha producido numerosas exposiciones de arte visual, incluyendo el primero y único hasta la fecha, exposición itinerante de arte visual titulado “Raíces – Roots”, visto por un estimado de 60,000 personas en diez ciudades atreves de 16 meces.
Él es el fundador y director artístico de Artist Studio Project, y creador del festival anual de El Quijote, un festival colaborativo de siete meses de largo que conmemora autor español y el gigante literario, Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra y los 400 años de “El Quijote”. Ahora entrando en su tercer año, el primer ano del festival fue muy exitoso alcanzando más de 50,000 personas. Se promovió más de 150 días de programación abarcando 10 ciudades de Carolina del Norte, con la mayoría de los eventos gratuitos y abiertos al público en general, numerosos eventos educativos en todos los niveles, infantil, primaria, escuela secundaria, colegios comunitarios, y universidades, y incluye el teatro, conciertos musicales internacionales, exposiciones de artes visuales, Académicos de renombre premiados, encuentros literarios con autores publicados, películas internacionales, conferencias mundiales sobre las Lenguas Románticas que incluyeron platicas sobre El Quijote, numerosas conferencias y eventos culinarios.
El Festival culminó con la primera y más grande lectura multilingüe en vivo maratón Don Quijote, que abarcó más de 5 días que incluyeron 8 grandes universidades de Carolina del Norte, y CastiLa (CENTRO INTERNACIONAL DE ESTUDIOS HISPÁNICOS) desde Granada España. El maratón itinerante en vivo tenía más de 500 lectores leyendo El Quijote I y II en 18 idiomas.
Su Nuevo Libro de Niños de Navidad de Doble Lenguaje se centra en la Celebración del Día de los Reyes Magos y fue publicado en enero de 2017 Luisito Celebrates Three Kings’ Day, Luisito Celebra El Día De Los Reyes Magos” (ISBN-10: 0998174904, ISBN-13: 978-0998174907) uno de los pocos ilustrados libros de doble lenguaje (Inglés, Español) en el mercado hoy en día centrándose en celebrar el Día de los Reyes. Ilustrado por “Gol” (Miguel Gómez Andrea, 1960) dibujante, dramaturgo y actor español, el libro fue publicado por ASP BOOKS.

Baile Folklorico Vicky Academy
“Baile Folklórico Vicky solo tiene la intención de promover y rescatar los valores y tradiciones de la cultura Mexicana”
Baile Folklórico Vicky tiene mas de 10 años, haciendo servicio voluntario y participando en diferentes eventos culturales. Tambien preparan comida para 200 trabajadores del campo y les llevan de comer a los campamentos. Esto lo realizan 3 a 4 veces en el verano cada año con la ayuda de familias y con el apoyo de una iglesia.

Folk Dancing Vicky has more than 10 years, volunteering and participating in different cultural events throughout the triangle area. They also prepare food for 200 farm workers and deliver the meals to the camps. They do this 3 to 4 times each year during the summer months with the help of families and with the support of a local church.
