EL MEROLICO – A REWORKING OF CERVANTES’ COMIC INTERLUDES

Hosted by: Elon Fund for Excellence, All Things in Spanish at Elon University and the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Elon University

What: EFE Tres Teatro – El Merolico
When: Monday, October 15, 2018
Time: 7:30 PM – 9 PM
Where: McKinnon. Elon University
105 W Haggard Ave, Elon, NC 27244

Cost: Free/Gratis General Seating

El Merolico – a reworking of Cervantes’ comic interludes

Cutting-edge Mexican company EFE TRES will present El Merolico (The Mountebank), a reworking of Cervantes’ comic interludes as delivered by a single traveling performer in small-town in Mexico.

About: The Merolico is a street merchant along the lines of a fortuneteller or medieval quack. He is a hustler who came to have a particular style in Mexico that is not seen in any other part of the world. Condemned to a solitary existence and eternal exile, the “Merolico” is relegated to the sidelines where he observes and reflects on human nature. No matter what his mood is, each day he has to face a new audience that awaits his best performance.

El Merolico interprets the stories told in the following entremeses by Miguel de Cervantes:

  • El retablo de las maravillas – Chirinos and Chanfalla are always looking for a new way to trick people. Their new joke is to make people think they see “marvelous things” on their small, traveling puppet stage when, in fact, there is nothing there.
  • La cueva de Salamanca – Leonarda and her maid, Cristina, have affairs with the town’s barber and sacrist respectively. Then, they try to deceive Leonarda’s husband, Celindo. (Source: NPS.GOV)

Efe Tres Teatro

Efe Tres Teatro was formed 2012 by a group of performing artists coming together to playfully demonstrate that the classics, especially those of the baroque era, still have much to show us. Up to this point, their style has been to revive the ñaque style of theater in which a pair of actors during the Spanish Golden Age would play all of the parts of a complete work of theater. They seek to appeal to the spectator’s sense of fantasy, leaning toward theatricality and giving more importance to the imagination than a realistic portrayal. Based on these notions, they and each audience member create a unique world together.

DESCRIPTION:

How did a boy from a tiny town on the Caribbean coast become a writer who won the hearts of millions? How did he change our perception of reality with his work?

The answers lie in the incredible story of Gabriel García Márquez, the 1982 Nobel Prize winner in Literature.

A law-school dropout and political journalist who grew up in the poverty and violence of northern Colombia, Gabriel García Márquez became the writer of globally celebrated, critically-acclaimed books including Love in the Time of Cholera andOne Hundred Years of Solitude.

Known as “Gabo” to all of Latin America, Gabriel García Márquez’s sensual, “magical” sensibility leds him to the forefront of the political struggles of the 1970s and 1980s—including a pivotal and previously unknown role in negotiations between Cuban leader Fidel Castro and American President Bill Clinton—and into the hearts of readers across the world.

In addition to Clinton himself, the documentary GABO: THE CREATION OF GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ includes former Colombian president César Gaviria along with writers Juan Gabriel Vásquez and Plinio Apuleyo Mendoza; journalists Enrique Santos, María Jimena Duzán and Xavi Ayén;New Yorker correspondent and author Jon Lee Anderson; biographer Gerald Martin; literary agent Carmen Balcells; and siblings Aída and Jaime García Márquez in its thoughtful and personal study of the writer’s life and legacy.

“This biography of García Márquez has the narrative tension of an investigation.” —El Espectador

“Explores the ways in which the creative imagination can transform the raw material of life-time, memory, history, even the stone and soil of the earth itself-into illuminating works of art.” —The Boston Globe

“Webster has amassed an impressive collection of voices for his investigation into the life of the man behind the Nobel Prize-winning myth. —Remezcla

Recounts the life of the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude from birth in the humble village of Aracataca, in northern Colombia, through his passion for writing, family life, time in the political battles the 1970s and 1980s, and crowning as winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature.” —El Siglo de Torreón
