Grounding America explores the nation’s narrative through four commodities rooted in its land, labor, history, and people: CORN, COTTON, TOBACCO, and COAL.
For centuries, these materials have helped shape the American landscape. They fed people and animals, built economies, fueled industries, moved populations, transformed communities, and connected the United States to the world.
But their histories are also human histories.
They carry stories of Indigenous knowledge and stewardship, cultivation and extraction, enslavement and forced migration, agricultural and industrial labor, invention and expansion, prosperity and exploitation. They speak to the ways people have lived with the land, worked it, transformed it, depended upon it—and been transformed by it.
Grounding America brings these histories into conversation with the present through art, storytelling, scholarship, film, installations, class engagement, and community conversations.
It is an invitation to look more closely at familiar materials and discover the histories, people, places, and stories held within them.
Grounding America explora la narrativa de la nación a través de cuatro productos básicos arraigados en su tierra, su trabajo, su historia y su gente: MAÍZ, ALGODÓN, TABACO y CARBÓN.
Durante siglos, estos materiales han ayudado a dar forma al panorama estadounidense. Alimentaron a personas y animales, construyeron economías, impulsaron industrias, movilizaron poblaciones, transformaron comunidades y conectaron a los Estados Unidos con el mundo.
