What is Don Quixote? ¿Que es Don Quijote?
Don Quixote de la Mancha is the great novel created by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra 1547 – 1616, published in early 1605 in its first part with the title of “The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha” and in the second part in 1615 under the title of “The Ingenious gentleman Don Quijote de la Mancha” – this year (2015 – 2016 ) marks the 400th anniversary of this second publication.
It is one of the most extraordinary, complete and captivating works of universal literature, besides being one of the most translated throughout history. No wonder the Quijote has maintained its freshness and relevance over time, crossing borders and languages, permeating several centuries and many generations.
Don Quijote de la Mancha es la genial novela creada por el escritor español Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547 – 1616), aparecida a comienzos de 1605 en su primera parte con el título de “El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha”, y en la segunda parte en 1615 bajo el título de “El ingenioso caballero don Quijote de la Mancha” – este año (2015 – 2016) se celebran los 400 años de esta segunda publicación.
Es una de las obras más extraordinarias, completas y cautivadoras de la narrativa universal, además de ser una de las más traducidas a lo largo de la historia. No en vano el Quijote ha sabido mantener su frescura y vigencia a lo largo del tiempo, traspasando lenguas y fronteras, permeando varios siglos y una multitud de generaciones.
What is the Don Quixote Marathon? ¿Que es la Maratonica de Don Quijote?
By the hand and pen of Miguel de Cervantes, we’ll introduce you to the exciting and collective adventures of the culminating work of the Spanish and world literature masterpiece, Don Quixote.
The many voices of each of the participants will give life to the different characters and passages of this Spanish masterpiece. However not only will the Spanish and English languages be present; a space giving a voice to many other languages will be made available for those that wish to read Don Quixote in their own language.
De la mano y pluma de Miguel de Cervantes, te presentamos a las aventuras emocionantes y colectivos de la obra culminante de la obra maestra de la literatura española y mundial, Don Quijote.
Las muchas voces de cada uno de los participantes darán vida a los diferentes personajes y pasajes de esta obra maestra de español. Sin embargo, no sólo los idiomas español e inglés estarán presentes; se pondrá a disposición un espacio que da voz a muchos otros idiomas para los que deseen leer Don Quijote en su propio idioma.
Where did the idea of the marathon reading form?
¿De dónde surgió la idea de la Lectura Maratónica?
On April 23, 1616 literary giants Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare die.
To remember this date, the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1995 approved a proposal to promote culture and the protection of intellectual property. Thus, April 23 became World Book Day.
Since 2013, the Cultural Center of Spain and the University of Santiago, Chile, in order to maintain the extraordinary passion and dissemination of the work by Cervantes and contribute to the promotion of the love of reading, have organized an annual 24 hour live continuous reading of Don Quixote that takes place at the Cultural Center of Spain.
In 2012 Rafael A. Osuba Founder and Artistic Director of the El Quixote Festival begins his second attempt on working on creating the 400th year anniversary celebration of Don Quixote. (2015 – 2016)
Inspired by the initiative of the Cultural Center of Spain, in 2015 as part of the 7 month long collaborative El Quixote Festival the Don Quixote Reading Marathon is added as one of the major collaborative events of the festival.
Since 2016 will mark the 400th year anniversary of both Cervantes’s and Shakespeare’s death and to allow for maximum participation, the reading marathon was extended across the last week of the El Quixote Festival.
The challenge is to read the two books “The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha” and “The Ingenious gentleman Don Quijote de la Mancha” within 40 hours throughout the course of a normal work week. With the help of collaborators throughout the state of North Carolina this is shapping up to be one for the history books.
The plan is to turn the Marathon Reading into a yearly event that will take place on April 23.
El 23 de abril de 1616 los gigantes literarios Miguel de Cervantes y William Shakespeare mueren.
Para recordar esta fecha, la Conferencia General de la Organización para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura de las Naciones Unidas (UNESCO) en 1995 aprobó una propuesta para promover la cultura y la protección de la propiedad intelectual. Así es que el 23 de Abril se convirtió en el Día del Libro.
Desde 2013, el Centro Cultural de España y la Universidad de Santiago de Chile, con el fin de mantener la extraordinaria pasión y la difusión de la obra de Cervantes y contribuir a la promoción del gusto por la lectura, han organizado un 24 horas de lectura continua en directo anual de Don Quijote que tiene lugar en el Centro Cultural de España.
En 2012 Rafael A. Osuba Fundador y Director Artístico del Festival de El Quijote comienza su segundo intento en trabajar en la creación de la celebración del 400 aniversario del Quijote. (2015 – 2016)
Inspirado por la iniciativa del Centro Cultural de España, en el año 2015 como parte de la larga colaborativa de 7 meses El Festival de El Quijote, La Lectura Maratónica se añade como uno de los eventos más importantes del festival.
En el año 2016 se conmemorará el aniversario número 400 de tanto la muerte de Cervantes y de Shakespeare y por permitir la máxima participación, la Lectura Maratónica se extendió a través de la última semana de El Festival de El Quijote.
El reto es leer los dos libros “El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha” y “El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha” dentro de 40 horas en el transcurso de una semana de trabajo normal. Con la ayuda de colaboradores en todo el estado de Carolina del Norte este se esta convirtiendo en un proyecto historico.
El plan consiste en convertir La Lectura Maratónica en un evento anual que se llevará a cabo el 23 de abril.
Who Can Participate? ¿Quien Puede Participar?
Everyone… children, youth, adults and seniors; writers, actors, journalists, scientists, artists, businessmen, politicians; teachers, college and school; professionals, day or night workers and officials. There are two ways to participate in the marathon reading of Don Quixote, one of them is going as the general public, and the other is reading with us a specific fragment, for the latter you must register in advance.
Todos… niños, jóvenes, adultos y tercera edad; escritores, actores, periodistas, científicos, artistas, empresarios, políticos; profesores, universitarios y escolares; profesionales, trabajadores y funcionarios diurnos o nocturnos. Hay dos formas de participar en la Lectura Maratónica del Quijote, una de ellas es acudiendo como público en general, y la otra es leyendo con nosotros un fragmento especifico, para esta última hay que inscribirse con anterioridad.

Pre-Registration is via this page filling the registration form you will find in this section.
There are 3 simple steps:
• 1) Complete the registration form indicating which of the time blocks that we offer most accommodates you.
• 2) After reviewing your preferences and according to time availability, we will send you an email * with all times which have been allocated for your intervention in the Reading.
• 3) Finally, you should answer such mail accepting the “TIME ZONE ASSIGNED”. With your confirmation, your registration for the marathon reading of Don Quixote 2016 will have been done successfully!
La inscripción previa se efectúa a través de esta página www.iamquixote.com llenando la ficha de inscripción que encontrarás en este apartado.
Son 3 simples pasos:
•1) Completa la FICHA DE INSCRIPCIÓN indicando cuál o cuáles de los BLOQUES HORARIOS que ofrecemos que más te acomodan.
•2) Una vez revisadas tus preferencias y conforme a la disponibilidad horaria, enviaremos a tu correo electrónico la FRANJA HORARIA* que ha sido asignada para tu intervención en la Lectura.
•3) Por último, debes responder dicho correo aceptando el “Tiempo Asignado de Lectura”. Con tu confirmación, tu INSCRIPCIÓN A LA LECTURA MARATÓNICA de El QUIJOTE 2016 habrá sido realizada con éxito!
What You Should Expect – Lo Que Se Debe Esperar
Each time slot (*) corresponds to 60 minutes of reading.
Estimated readers involved in a time slot are between 5 and 20.
An estimated reading time per person is between 2-10 minutes.
Pre-registration helps us keep things moving and efficient, although walk-ins are also welcomed.
To allow time for placing you in the queue, we ask that all pre- registered readers check in to the location a few minutes before your assigned time slot.
Being a highly participatory activity, we appreciate some flexibility and understanding with any delays.
Your reading can be in any language, although most commonly will be in Spanish or English.
If you wish to read in another language we ask that you bring a copy in said language.
Please help us get the word out and bring a friend!
Cada plazo (*) corresponde a 60 minutos de lectura.
En un plazo intervienen entre 5 y 20 lectores.
El tiempo de lectura estimado por persona es de 2 a 10 minutos.
La registración previa nos ayuda a mantener orden y eficiencia, pero no es necesario registrarse para participar (a nadie se le va a negar la oportunidad).
Para poder acomodar a todos en el horario, se ruega que todos los lectores lleguen al sitio designado algunos minutos antes del plazo de lectura.
Al ser una actividad altamente participativa, se les agradecerá cierta flexibilidad en el caso de que haya algún retraso.
La lectura puede ser en cualquier idioma, aunque con más frecuencia será en español o inglés.
Si hay alguien que desee leer en otro idioma es necesario que traiga una copia de la novela en dicho.
Haga el favor de correr la voz y traer a un amigo.
