Traveling Graphic Biography Exhibit in Wake County Libraries.

“The life of Cervantes 1547 – 1616”
A traveling library exhibit

Composed of 15 panels that collect drawings from the book “Cervantes, la ensoñación de un genio” (Cervantes, the dream of a genius) this exhibit was created by the cartoonist, playwright and actor Miguel Gómez Andrea, known as Gol. The exhibition forms part of the tenth annual El Quixote Festival.

The exhibition narrates the life of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra as a biography-comic. The exhibit aims to immerse the observer in Cervantes’ process of creating his immortal Don Quixote de la Mancha.

In addition to explore the motivations and the circumstances that led him to give life to this eternal gentleman.

Just like Don Quixote went on adventures, we take the exhibit on a journey across the Wake County regional libraries of North Carolina.

Why a graphic novel? 

Our goal is to inspire communities to learn more about exciting topics and to read more.  Graphic novels have been proven to improve reading skills like any other book would.  Packed with rich plots, complex storylines, and captivating visual elements, graphic novels have a unique appeal to readers — and when people find books they are interested in, they are more likely to read.

By providing access to engaging topics across a variety of formats, young readers are more likely to build strong reading habits. Frequent readers have an average of 139 books in their homes compared to 74 books for infrequent readers. Graphic novels are a great addition to any home library, as they powerfully motivate both avid and reluctant readers by igniting their imaginations and sparking creativity in new, exciting ways.

Graphic Novels are also a great tool for readers learning a new language.

It is our hope that viewers of this exhibit will be inspired to learn more about Cervantes and his Masterpiece Don Quixote De La Mancha.

The artist

Gol (Miguel Gómez Andrea, 1960) is a cartoonist, playwright and actor. In his youth he studied nautical studies and spent four years at sea as a Merchant Navy Pilot. After a long trip to India and the birth of his children, he left the city and the sea to settle in the Sierra de Gredos. He made a living as a miniature decorator until he found a place in the professional world of theater and comics.

Since 1993 he has directed Estudio La Recua S.L. specialized in historical dissemination through the artistic medium, mainly theater and comics. For eight years he played Sancho Panza in the show Delirio de Don Quijote y Sancho Panza, which allowed him to get to know Cervantes and his work in depth. He has published more than 40 historical comic titles for institutions and independent publishers, in addition to several historical popular books on a wide variety of topics. He has also written and performed several plays throughout the national territory.

Una exposición itinerante de la biblioteca

“La vida de Cervantes 1547 1616”, compuesta por 15 paneles que recogen dibujos del libro “Cervantes, la ensoñación de un genio” fue creada por el dibujante, dramaturgo y actor Miguel Gómez Andrea, conocido como Gol.
La exposición forma parte del décimo Festival anual de El Quijote.

La exposición narra la vida de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra a modo de biografía-cómic. La exposición pretende sumergir al observador en el proceso de creación de Cervantes de su inmortal Don Quijote de la Mancha.

Además de explorar las motivaciones y las circunstancias que lo llevaron a darle vida a este eterno caballero.

Así como Don Quijote se fue de aventuras, Llevamos la exposición a un viaje por las bibliotecas regionales del condado de Wake en Carolina del Norte.

¿Por qué una novela gráfica?

Nuestro objetivo es inspirar a las comunidades a aprender más sobre temas interesantes y a leer más. Se ha demostrado que las novelas gráficas mejoran las habilidades de lectura como lo haría cualquier otro libro. Repletas de tramas ricas, historias complejas y elementos visuales cautivadores, las novelas gráficas tienen un atractivo único para los lectores, y cuando las personas encuentran libros que les interesan, es más probable que los lean.

Al brindar acceso a temas interesantes en una variedad de formatos, es más probable que los jóvenes desarrollen sólidos hábitos de lectura. Los lectores frecuentes tienen una media de 139 libros en sus hogares, frente a los 74 libros de los lectores poco frecuentes. Las novelas gráficas son una gran adición a cualquier biblioteca doméstica, ya que motivan poderosamente tanto a los lectores ávidos como a los reacios al encender su imaginación y despertar la creatividad de maneras nuevas y emocionantes.
Las novelas gráficas también son una gran herramienta para los lectores que aprenden un nuevo idioma.

Esperamos que los espectadores de esta exposición se inspiren para aprender más sobre Cervantes y su obra maestra Don Quijote de La Mancha.

El artista

Gol (Miguel Gómez Andrea, 1960) es dibujante, dramaturgo y actor. En su juventud estudió estudios náuticos y estuvo cuatro años en el mar como Piloto de la Marina Mercante. Tras un largo viaje a la India y el nacimiento de sus hijos, abandonó la ciudad y el mar para instalarse en la Sierra de Gredos. Se ganó la vida como decorador de miniaturas hasta que encontró un hueco en el mundo profesional del teatro y el cómic.

Desde 1993 dirige Estudio La Recua S.L. Especializado en la difusión histórica a través del medio artístico, principalmente teatro y cómic. Durante ocho años interpretó a Sancho Panza en el espectáculo Delirio de Don Quijote y Sancho Panza, lo que le permitió conocer en profundidad a Cervantes y su obra. Ha publicado más de 40 títulos de cómic histórico para instituciones y editoriales independientes, además de varios libros de divulgación histórica sobre una amplia variedad de temas. También ha escrito e interpretado varias obras de teatro por todo el territorio nacional.

Pío Pío – El Pollito que quería volar.
The little chick that wanted to fly.

This event forms part of Read Local 2024.

The author describes this story as quixotic because he believes it is ok to dream big even when others see your dreams as foolish, impractical or unlikely.
Summary: An encouraging and humorous bilingual quixotic story features an endearing young chick who, despite all advice to the contrary, is convinced he can fly. Each page spread contains Spanish narrative on left and English narrative on right and abounds in colorful illustrations of the little chick, his mother hen, and his neighborhood friends Don Gallo the rooster and Don Chango the blackbird. Pío Pío (Pea-Oh, Pea-Oh) is a small bird with big dreams to fly to the top of the trees and eat the delicious breadfruit growing there. Through a fortunate encounter that launches Pío Pío into “flight”, his dream becomes a reality much to the surprise and amazement of his family and friends and reinforces the belief that it is okay to “dream big” and that “nothing is impossible”.
An informative Glossary of historical, cultural, and linguistic references rounds out this robust book. The language used is entertaining and memorable, which makes this a great resource for those learning Spanish or English.

El autor describe esta historia como quijotesca porque cree que está bien soñar en grande incluso cuando otros ven tus sueños como tontos, poco prácticos o improbables.
Resumen: Una alentadora y divertida historia quijotesca bilingüe presenta a un entrañable pollito que, a pesar de todos los consejos en sentido contrario, está convencido de que puede volar. Cada página contiene narrativa en español a la izquierda y narrativa en inglés a la derecha y abunda en coloridas ilustraciones del pollito, su mamá gallina y sus amigos de la granja, Don Gallo el gallo y Don Chango el pájaro negro. Luke Vandergriff is a Bolivian-American visual artist, storyteller, and musician who makes his own musical instruments from recycled materials. Originally from the U.S., Luke has lived in Bolivia and traveled the world inspiring creativity and hope to diverse audiences including refugees, communities affected by natural disasters, orphans, and those who seemingly have it all. His desire is to uplift, strengthen, and empower his audiences through his talents.

Luke Vandergriff es un boliviano americano, artista visual, cuentacuentos y músico quien fabrica sus propios instrumentos musicales con materiales reciclados. Originalmente de EE.UU., Luke ha vivido en Bolivia y viajó por el mundo inspirando creatividad y esperanza para diversas audiencias como refugiados, comunidades afectadas por desastres naturales, huérfanos, y los que aparentemente lo tienen todo.  2:00  Rebecca Camila Villacis reads her new book: Laura’s Dream

Rebecca is 10 years old and is in the 5th grade at Connie Bonnie leadership academy in Huntersville NC.  She is an A student and in the school’s honor roll.
Rebecca enjoys going to missions trips with the church. She most recently traveled to the Dominican Republic and worked with many children her age.
She has written many stories and hopes to publish them very soon.  She lives in Huntersville North Carolina with her parents Agustin and Marola Villacis who are originally from Ecuador.

Rebecca tiene 10 años y está en quinto grado en la academia de liderazgo Connie Bonnie en Huntersville, Carolina del Norte. Es una estudiante con calificaciones sobresalientes y está en el cuadro de honor de la escuela.
Rebecca disfruta de ir a viajes misioneros con la iglesia. Recientemente viajó a la República Dominicana y trabajó con muchos niños de su edad.

Laura’s Dream

Summary:

Laura dreamed of becoming an author but ended up being an English and literature teacher. Throughout her life, she wrote many stories, and at the age of 80, she was invited to the Museum of Famous Authors, fulfilling her childhood dream. She passed away happily at the age of 95, always remembering her passion for writing.

Laura soñaba con ser autora, pero terminó siendo profesora de inglés y literatura. A lo largo de su vida, escribió muchas historias y, a los 80 años, fue invitada al Museo de Autores Famosos, cumpliendo así su sueño de infancia. Murió feliz a los 95 años, recordando siempre su pasión por la escritura.

Luisto loves going to Abuelita’s house because on cold days she prepares “leche con chocolate caliente”! He loves hot cocoa!
Especially the way his Abuelita makes it! She takes a block of hard bittersweet chocolate, she says it is “Comida de Los Dioses”, Food of the Gods.
Abuelita tells him that chocolate has wonderful powers, they break it up into little pieces, melt it, then add sugar and hot milk, sometimes cinnamon.
However, this day was even more special for this day they would prepare for the arrival of Los Tres Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men.

¡A Luisito le encanta ir a la casa de su abuelita, porque en los días fríos ella le prepara leche con chocolate caliente! ¡A Luisito le encanta el chocolate caliente! ¡Especialmente de la forma en que su abuelita lo hace! Toma un bloque duro, de sabor agridulce, Teobroma, que significa “comida de Los Dioses “.  Abuelita le dice que el chocolate tiene poderes maravillosos. Lo rompe en pedacitos que muele, derrite, y luego les agrega leche caliente, azúcar y, a veces, canela. Sin embargo, este día es aún más especial porque se preparan para la llegada de Los Tres Reyes Magos.
