Here are some tips:
Yellow & Orange | Represent the sun, light, and life. These colors are most commonly seen in the marigolds found everywhere during Día de los Muertos. Pink | Represents the happiness and celebration associated with Día de los Muertos. Red | Represents blood, appropriately. Purple | Represents pain, suffering, grief, and mourning and to use this color is to acknowledge the loss of loved ones. White | Represents purity, hope, and renewal of the spirit after death. Black | Represents death, but more so, the land of the dead.

The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a celebration that started in Mesoamerica (an area that covers Central Mexico to Costa Rica) about 3,000 years ago. Different cultures including Aztec, Maya and Toltec, celebrated the life of their loved ones, they used to have a celebration for the infants or children that had deceased and another one for the adults. These celebrations usually coincided with the migration of the Monarch Butterflies which some cultures associate with spirits returning home. When the Spaniards arrived they fused their catholic celebrations with the indigenous rituals celebrating two Spanish holidays: All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Soul’s Day (Nov. 2). Día de Muertos is often celebrated on November 1st as a day to remember children who have passed away, and on Nov. 2 to honor adults.
In 2008, the tradition was inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Although Day of The Dead is mostly considered a Mexican Holiday it is celebrated in one form or another in many countries to include: Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Peru, El Salvador, Venezuela and many others.
Chatham Community Library will host a El Día de los Muertos – Day of the Dead celebration on Saturday, November 3, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm in the Holmes Meeting Room.
Sharon Mujica
The Library’s celebration begins with a presentation on the history of the holiday. Sharon Mujica, former Director of the Yucatec Maya Program at the Institute for the Study of the Americas at UNC-Chapel Hill will speak about the cultural significance of Día de los Muertos and how the observance has taken root in the United States. Mexican artist Jesús Pastor will lead a workshop on creating collage and sugar skulls.
In collaboration with the Artist Studio Project, Chilean composer and storyteller Carlos Antonio Salvo will perform original compositions. Salvo’s music transposes the neocolonialism of the Americas by setting social realities to lyrics and harmonies; the essence of the international New Song Movement.

Traditional dance from Latin and South America will be performed by the Lee County Magetsi 4-H Club.
Other activities include bi-lingual storytelling, crafts, and face painting. A large ofrenda will be displayed on which attendees are welcome to place items of their own to remember their loved ones. The ofrenda, when created in part by the community, becomes a symbol that people from all cultures can identify with. Traditional foods and beverages will also be available.
La Biblioteca Comunitaria de Chatham celebrará El Día de los Muertos – Day of The Dead, el sábado 3 de noviembre, de 11:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m. en la sala de reuniones Holmes.
La celebración de la biblioteca comienza con una presentación sobre la historia de El dia de Muertos. Luisto loves going to Abuelita’s house because on cold days she prepares “leche con chocolate caliente”! He loves hot cocoa!
Especially the way his Abuelita makes it! She takes a block of hard bittersweet chocolate, she says it is “Comida de Los Dioses”, Food of the Gods.
Abuelita tells him that chocolate has wonderful powers, they break it up into little pieces, melt it, then add sugar and hot milk, sometimes cinnamon.
However, this day was even more special for this day they would prepare for the arrival of Los Tres Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men.
¡A Luisito le encanta ir a la casa de su abuelita, porque en los días fríos ella le prepara leche con chocolate caliente! ¡A Luisito le encanta el chocolate caliente! ¡Especialmente de la forma en que su abuelita lo hace!
