VOCES – VWA – VOIX – VOICES provides a platform for artists of color (Hispanic, Latino, Indigenous, Afro Latino, and Latinx) to share their work through multiple forms of expression. The scope includes the visual arts, poetry, storytelling, fashion, film, performance, theatre, gastronomy, multimedia, etc. A group of selected artists will participate in a series of events that highlight stories of the Caribbean as part of The 8th Annual El Quixote Festival 2022-2023 (September 29 through April 23).

The El Quixote Festival produced by Artist Studio Project is a primarily collaborative festival produced across the state of North Carolina and highlights the work of one or several artists.

 

VOCES – VWA – VOIX – VOICES proporciona una plataforma para artistas de color (hispanos, latinos, indígenas, afrolatinos y latinx) para compartir su trabajo a través de múltiples formas de expresión. El alcance incluye artes visuales, poesía, narración de cuentos, moda, cine, performance, teatro, gastronomía, multimedia, etc. Un grupo de artistas seleccionados participará en una serie de eventos que destacan historias del caribe como parte de The 8th Annual El Fiesta del Quijote 2022-2023 (29 de septiembre al 23 de abril).

El Festival El Quijote producido por Artist Studio Project es un festival principalmente colaborativo producido en todo el estado de Carolina del Norte y destaca el trabajo de uno o varios artistas.

Musical Artists: Latin Beats is a duo made up of vocalists Gabriela Marcano and Pedro Sojo (Gaby and Pedro). With more than 20 years of performing on stages across the world, Gaby and Pedro have united their talents to offer “Latin Beats”. A musical experience with a wide variety of genres such as: boleros, merengue, salsa, bachata, ballads, reggae, cumbia, pop, rock and even reggaetón.

Cultural producer and visual artist Rafael A. Osuba shares his art and welcomes visitors to create and have fun at the Arts and Crafts table.

Ambiorix Santos is a painter raised and trained in The Dominican Republic. His work is created from the experiences and objects that surround him on a daily basis. Santos says of his art “it is rooted in and evolves from my sense of wonder, and the desire to add simple yet profound dimension to the world around me. I look to bring life to the ineffable by developing new spaces, structures, and visual possibilities”.

Santos seeks to integrate form and light in his paintings in order to establish a dialogue between the physical and the possible. His work provides closer reflection on the marks left by the consequences of his actions. He looks to spark life into these inert materials, and discover their secrets, by reviving the collective memory they contain.

Ambiorix Santos es un pintor criado y formado en República Dominicana. Su obra se crea a partir de las experiencias y objetos que le rodean en el día a día. Santos dice de su arte que “está enraizado y evoluciona a partir de mi sentido de asombro y el deseo de agregar una dimensión simple pero profunda al mundo que me rodea. Busco darle vida a lo inefable desarrollando nuevos espacios, estructuras y posibilidades visuales”.

Santos busca integrar forma y luz en sus pinturas para establecer un diálogo entre lo físico y lo posible. Su obra ofrece una reflexión más cercana sobre las marcas dejadas por las consecuencias de sus actos. Busca dar vida a estos materiales inertes y descubrir sus secretos, reviviendo la memoria colectiva que contienen.

Noelia Quintero Herencia is a filmmaker, researcher, and professor on the Faculty of Communications at the University of Puerto Rico. Quintero studied Digital Visual Culture from La Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona; earned a master’s degree in Cinema Studies from New York University, and received her bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Communication from the University of Puerto Rico. She has worked as a television producer and director in Mexico, New York, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, where she created and produced a TV series entitled Prohibido Olvidar consisting of more than 52 documentaries featuring Puerto Rican cultural icons. Quintero wrote and directed “La Motora Roja Tiene Que Aparecer,” a documentary film about urban art, and she has been developing and directing music videos and content for Dominican writer and composer, Rita Indiana. “Papi” is her first feature film. She is currently writing a science fiction TV series.

The NCLAFF has selected three of Del Llano shorts from his Series titled: Who is Nicanor O’Donell?. All of the films are independent, digitally captured, produced and distributed by Eduardo del Llano in the past decade and a half. The series focuses on the daily experiences of Nicanor O’Donell (Luis Alberto García), a kind of prototypical Cuban man, who acts as a vehicle to present a satirical perspective on different aspects of contemporary Cuba. We can talk about a sort of realism in Del Llano’s short films, a deep and immerse knowledge of the Cuban experience, but at the same time the capacity to move away to look at it objectively. Del Llano also represents an emergent independent cinema sector in the island; his work functions as a sort of “in-betweeness.”

Nicanor is making a gourmet coffee when two strangers knock at his door. They identified themselves as members of the Secret Police. They are visiting him to install microphones in his apartment to listen and record his anti-regime remarks. But having only two available microphone heads to install in one room only, they ask for Nicanor´s help: from now on he should criticize the government in that room only…

This concert highlights the importance of music-making among Latin American migrants in North Carolina, as well as the prominence of Latin American-derived music in the Triangle area. This, the first of two concerts produced by Raíces, Rutas y Ritmos, intend to share how music is at the center of the way migrant communities adapt to new life conditions, maintain relationships with their places of origin, navigate shifting social circumstances, cultivate and share new ideas of home and belonging.

The concert is designed using roots, routes, and rhythms as driving concepts. A time/space travel via sound, music, and dance (all embodied practices). Seven forms (genres of music) will share the sounds from the end of the world, from the resistance of indigenous peoples in Mexico, the Argentinean pampas and the cultrum (Mapuche drum), afro rhythms and lyrics from Brazil, the crisp sound of bolero, salsa, bomba y plena to the strong vocality of the mariachi and situated free-style indigenous rap. A mix of genres, languages, bodies, and stories celebrating the roots, routes, and rhythms of Latin American migrants in North Carolina.

Duke Students will serve as MCs presenting their conversations and knowledge developed during a semester-long class
“Bridging Cultures, Latino Lives, and Experiences in NC” (SPAN 313).

You are all invited to enjoy and learn (and dance) with this talented group.

La influencia de la música latinoamericana en Carolina del Norte

Este concierto destaca la importancia de la creación musical entre los inmigrantes latinoamericanos en Carolina del Norte, así como la importancia de la música de origen latinoamericano en el área del Triángulo. Este, el primero de dos conciertos producidos por Raíces, Rutas y Ritmos, pretende compartir como la música está en el centro de la experiencia de las comunidades migrantes, como se adaptan a las nuevas condiciones de vida, mantienen relaciones con sus lugares de origen, navegan las cambiantes circunstancias sociales, cultivan y comparten nuevas ideas de hogar y de pertenencia.

El concierto está diseñado bajo el concepto de raíces, rutas y ritmos. Un viaje en el tiempo/espacio a través del sonido, la música y la danza (todas prácticas encarnadas). Siete formas (géneros musicales) compartirán sonidos y letras, desde la resistencia de los pueblos indígenas en México, la pampa argentina y el cultrum (tambor mapuche), ritmos afro e historias del Brasil, el sonido crujiente del bolero, la salsa, bomba y plena, a la fuerte vocalidad del mariachi y rap autóctono de estilo libre. Una mezcla de géneros, lenguajes, cuerpos e historias para celebrar las raíces, rutas y ritmos de los inmigrantes latinoamericanos en Carolina del Norte.

Estudiantes de Duke servirán de MC y presentarán el conocimiento adquirido a través de sus conversaciones con los artistas durante este semestre en el curso, “Uniendo culturas: vidas y experiencias latinas en NC” (SPAN 313).

Están todos y todas invitados a disfrutar y aprender (y bailar) con este grupo de talentosos músicos.

Artist Statement:

Afro – Swirls Jose Manuel Cruz

I believe that my work embodies my urban culture with a splash of reality and the opportunity for me to explore the canvas and the materials I use. My Artistic Connections and Extensions exhibit
allows me to explore those avenues and take it a step further in the freedoms I have to express myself as the artist that I AM.

I want to express the love I have for growing up in a (BrickCity) like Newark, NJ. The concrete jungle like some call it or a mini-NY City since it was just hop on a train or a 15-minute drive to NY City. I am able to paint and add my intricate details where I need without any judgements or critiques.

During this time of a pandemic and systemic racism I want my work to reflect that there are better times ahead. I want people to feel the joy and warmth in the colors I use and at the same time let the viewer connect with the piece and hopefully find something relative to their own experiences in life.

 

Meet the Artist

Artist Jose Manuel Cruz

José Cruz is a Puerto Rican/Colombian Latino Artist. He has a unique style and loves working with color and all mediums. Mr. Cruz has been an Art Educator for over 20 years at all grade levels. He has been an advocate for the arts in education and enjoys bringing art to the communities and at the same time bring his experiences as a professional exhibiting artist and photographer back to the classroom.

Mr. Cruz graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Fine Arts in 1996 from New Jersey City University. In 1986 he started substitute teaching in the Newark Public Schools. It inspired him to pursue a career as an Art Educator.

For 38 years he has exhibited his works in the United States and abroad. His work embodies the true essence that comes from living and growing up in an urban area around family and friends that always look out for each other and cherished every Latin, every African American, every Urban, and every Ghetto experience.

A “chocolatada” is a social event in which chocolate, (in this case hot chocolate) becomes the reason for the meeting. It is usually a festive meeting with a commemorative or celebration character. In this case Luisito celebrates Three Kings’ Day and his favorite drink is hot chocolate.

Luisto loves going to Abuelita’s house because on cold days she prepares “leche con chocolate caliente”! He loves hot cocoa!
Especially the way his Abuelita makes it! She takes a block of hard bittersweet chocolate, she says it is “Comida de Los Dioses”, Food of the Gods.
Abuelita tells him that chocolate has wonderful powers, they break it up into little pieces, melt it, then add sugar and hot milk, sometimes cinnamon.
However, this day was even more special for this day they would prepare for the arrival of Los Tres Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men.

¡A Luisito le encanta ir a la casa de su abuelita, porque en los días fríos ella le prepara leche con chocolate caliente! ¡A Luisito le encanta el chocolate caliente! ¡Especialmente de la forma en que su abuelita lo hace! Toma un bloque duro, de sabor agridulce, Teobroma, que significa “comida de Los Dioses “.  Abuelita le dice que el chocolate tiene poderes maravillosos. Lo rompe en pedacitos que muele, derrite, y luego les agrega leche caliente, azúcar y, a veces, canela. Sin embargo, este día es aún más especial porque se preparan para la llegada de Los Tres Reyes Magos.
