Ser Plantas | Being Plants
Plants are at the first level of every food chain. Autotrophs are usually plants or one-celled organisms. Scientists call them “producers” because they make their own food. Nearly all autotrophs use a process called photosynthesis to create “food” (a nutrient called glucose) from sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. In Indigenous America, Inti (the sun) is the god of life, the creator of photosynthesis. Cinema is another form of photosynthesis, a light that creates food for inspiration. NCLAFF 2023 will be honoring plants, as present in the everyday, in the landscape, and the economies that have had an important impact in the region (timber, rubber, sugar, banana, coca, etc.). Not all festival films will have plants as a theme, but every person lives within a landscape shaped, contained, and supported by them.

TRIO HUASTECO
Son huasteco is a string-based tradition that originates in the northeastern region of Mexico. Miguel, Santana, and Alejandro play son huasteco together as the Trio Huasteco in Durham, North Carolina, where they perform at festivals, quinceañeras, weddings, and other special occasions.
El son huasteco es una tradición de cuerdas que se origina en la región noreste de México. Miguel, Santana y Alejandro tocan son huasteco juntos como el Trío Huasteco en Durham, Carolina del Norte, donde actúan en festivales, quinceañeras, bodas y otras ocasiones especiales.
LETY ALVAREZ
Leticia Alvarez is a Mexican artist; she studied Art at the University of Monterrey (UDEM), and participated on numerous exhibitions. Leticia got a Master degree in Education through Art, from the University of Nuevo León. She got married and moved to the United States, where she got a scholarship at the University of Virginia Tech, and obtain a Master Degree in Latin American Studies, History and Literature. Her love for Mexico and her roots, where translated into art with different motives, first traditional Mexican toys, artesian, houses and even religious images are used to evoke the culture, traditions and memories that they represent. Leticia has collaborated with the NCMA as an art teacher for different events, as well as with ArtSpace and the COR museum where she has also created the altar for the Day of the Dead for the past many years. She lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband David Elizondo and her four kids, where she teaches Art in her studio.
Leticia Álvarez es una artista mexicana; Estudió Arte en la Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) y participó en numerosas exposiciones. Leticia obtuvo su título de Maestría en Educación a través del Arte, de la Universidad de Nuevo León. Se casó y se mudó a los Estados Unidos, donde obtuvo una beca en la Universidad de Virginia Tech y obtuvo una Maestría en Estudios, Historia y Literatura Latinoamericana. Su amor por México y sus raíces, fueron plasmados en arte con diferentes motivos, primero se utilizan juguetes tradicionales mexicanos, casas artesanales e incluso imágenes religiosas para evocar la cultura, tradiciones y recuerdos que representan. Leticia ha colaborado con el NCMA como profesora de arte para diferentes eventos, así como con ArtSpace y el museo COR donde también ha creado el altar para el Día de Muertos durante los últimos años. Vive en Raleigh, Carolina del Norte con su esposo David Elizondo y sus cuatro hijos, donde enseña arte en su estudio.
Somos un grupo de baile que representa una de las tantas culturas y tradiciones que México tiene para ofrecer. Nos identificamos por nuestros sonidos e instrumentos, danza, canto y oraciones. Estamos orgullosos de nuestras raíces y enseñamos a nuestros hijos nuestra cultura.
We are a dance group that represents one of the many cultures and traditions that Mexico has to offer. We identify ourselves by our sounds and instruments, dance, song and prayers. We are proud of our roots and we teach our children our culture.
Author, Dreamer, and Artist, Carolina Fonseca Jimenez inspires her community through her children’s books and dream guidance. Her biggest treasure is her children’s book, Lupita and the Magic of Mexico which was turned into a play production through a magical partnership with Revista Latina and many community members.
La autora, soñadora y artista Carolina Fonseca Jiménez inspira a su comunidad a través de sus libros infantiles y su guía sobre los sueños. Su mayor tesoro es su libro infantil, Lupita y la Magia de México, que se convirtió en una obra de teatro gracias a una asociación mágica con Revista Latina y muchos miembros de la comunidad.

CAROLINA CORONA Una artista Veracruzana. Su trabajo es diverso, inspirado y personal. Refleja su cultura y sus colores y texturas. Su objetivo es compartir su historia y el amor por las tradiciones Mexicanas con las que crecío. Tambien comparte un mensaje ambiental. Su meta es llamar atención a la destrucción de la naturaleza y al cambio climatico y como estos problemas afectan nuestras vidas y los ecosistemas naturales.
A Veracruz artist. Her work is diverse, inspired and personal. She reflects her culture and her colors and textures. Her goal is to share her story and her love for the Mexican traditions she grew up with. She also shares an environmental message. Her goal is to call attention to the destruction of nature and climate change and how these problems affect our lives and natural ecosystems.

Magali Santos originally from San Pablito, Puebla Mexico, proudly Otomi indigenous and is an artisan of the beads and amate paper (organic paper) in her brightly colored clothing in which she represents the Otomi woman very well… her blouse is handmade with beads from Otomies artisans with white poplin fabric, the long handmade skirt is made of wool, the red handmade sash is also made of wool, Quexquéme or also known as Quexquémilt that she has on top of her head is a garment composed of 2 rectangles of the same size with thick thread embroidery made in the shape of a cross giving shape to its flower drawings and in the red tone made of wool and its blue ribbon, finally the basket which is a beautiful accessory…

Luisito is the main character in Rafael A. Osuba’s book – Luisito Celebrates Three Kings’ Day and he loves hot chocolate.

CHOCOLATADA – (CHO-CO-LA-TA-DAH)
A “chocolatada” is a social event in which chocolate, (in this case hot chocolate) becomes the reason for the meeting. It is usually a festive meeting with a commemorative or celebration character. In this case Luisito celebrates Three Kings’ Day and his favorite drink is hot chocolate.

Luisto loves going to Abuelita’s house because on cold days she prepares “leche con chocolate caliente”! He loves hot cocoa!
Especially the way his Abuelita makes it! She takes a block of hard bittersweet chocolate, she says it is “Comida de Los Dioses”, Food of the Gods.
Abuelita tells him that chocolate has wonderful powers, they break it up into little pieces, melt it, then add sugar and hot milk, sometimes cinnamon.
However, this day was even more special for this day they would prepare for the arrival of Los Tres Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men.
¡A Luisito le encanta ir a la casa de su abuelita, porque en los días fríos ella le prepara leche con chocolate caliente! ¡A Luisito le encanta el chocolate caliente! ¡Especialmente de la forma en que su abuelita lo hace! The Assembly proclaimed the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) after celebrating the Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019. Since its establishment, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) of the United Nations has drawn attention to the critical situation of Indigenous Languages. As revitalizing Indigenous languages requires sustained efforts, The International Decade aims to draw attention to the critical loss of Indigenous languages and the urgent need to preserve, revitalize, and promote Indigenous languages and take further urgent steps for their conservation and revitalization. After the call made in Chiapas by the EZLN thirty years ago, a renewed interest in the lives and experiences of Indigenous peoples of the continent has emerged. This is a small effort to share the Indigenous languages of Latin America and the Caribbean, where most of that diversity is still alive via academic, documentary, and artistic forms. Join us to be immersed in multiple ways to see and experience the world because languages matter, as they are builders of worlds.
La Asamblea General de la ONU proclamó el Decenio Internacional de las Lenguas Indígenas (2022-2032), tras la celebración del año de las lenguas indígenas en 2019. Desde su creación, el Foro Permanente para las Cuestiones Indígenas (PFII) de Naciones Unidas ha llamado la atención sobre la Situación crítica de las Lenguas Indígenas. Dado que la revitalización de las lenguas indígenas requiere esfuerzos sostenidos, el Decenio Internacional tiene como objetivo llamar la atención sobre la pérdida crítica de las lenguas indígenas y la necesidad urgente de preservar, revitalizar y promover las lenguas indígenas y de tomar nuevas medidas urgentes para su conservación y revitalización. Luego del llamado hecho en Chiapas por el EZLN hace treinta años, ha surgido un renovado interés por las vidas y experiencias de los pueblos indígenas del continente. Este es un pequeño esfuerzo para compartir a través de formas académicas, documentales y artísticas lenguas indígenas de América Latina y el Caribe, donde la mayor parte de esa diversidad aún está viva. Únase a nosotros para sumergirse en múltiples formas de ver y experimentar el mundo, porque los idiomas importan, ya que son constructores de mundos.

Mother Earth has many names and since the beginning of time humans have had a connection with her.
It is important to take time to realize her importance in our lives and how we must do our part in preserving all her many gifts.
It is not the title or name we use to address her that is important; She is the eternal lady and the mother of all life, and those who seek her need only walk outside to see, feel and experience her greatness. She is great and very giving yet fragile at the same time.
Just as all life comes from Mother Earth, all life inevitably returns to her as well. No matter what path you walk in this life, let us all take care of Mother Earth as she takes care of us.
La Madre Tierra tiene muchos nombres y desde el principio de los tiempos el ser humano ha tenido una conexión con ella.
Es importante tomarnos el tiempo para darnos cuenta de su importancia en nuestras vidas y de cómo debemos hacer nuestra parte para preservar todos sus dones.
No es el título o el nombre que usamos para dirigirnos a ella lo que es importante; Ella es la dama eterna y la madre de toda la vida, y quienes la buscan sólo necesitan caminar afuera para ver, sentir y experimentar su grandeza. Ella es grandiosa y muy generosa pero frágil al mismo tiempo.

Celebrating children
International Children’s Day, which is not the same as Universal Children’s Day, is celebrated annually on June 1. Although widely celebrated, many countries do not recognize June 1 as Children’s Day.
The International Day for the Protection of Children is also celebrated on June 1 and has helped elevate June 1 as the internationally recognized day to celebrate children. The International Day for the Protection of Children was universally established in 1954 to protect the rights of children, end child labor and ensure access to education.
In the United States, Children’s Day is typically celebrated on the second Sunday in June. The tradition dates back to 1856 when the Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, held a special service focused on children.
Over the years, several denominations have declared or recommended an annual celebration for children, but no government action has been taken. Past presidents have periodically proclaimed National Children’s Day or National Children’s Day, but no official annual celebration of National Children’s Day has been established in the United States.
Universal Children’s Day was created to change the way society views and treats children and improve their well-being. First established by a United Nations resolution in 1954, Universal Children’s Day is a day to defend and defend the rights of children. Children’s rights are not special rights or different rights. They are fundamental human rights. A child is a human being who has the right to be treated as such and should be celebrated as such.

Our unique, “ready-made” approach to puppetry empowers local volunteers and provides them with the training and resources to give high quality performances for their own communities.
DRAGONCILLO is a puppetry troupe comprised of university scholars specializing in golden age theatre: Jason Yancey (Grand Valley State University); Esther Fernandez (Rice University); Jonathan Wade (Meredith College); and Jared White (Hillsdale College). The group debuted in April 2018 with a shadow puppet adaptation of the Juan Rana figure from golden age entremeses into an original production titled, “the fabulous Johnny frog,” offering performances in el Paso, Texas, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. The company is dedicated to imaginative storytelling that educates while it entertains.

JEGHETTO
Tarish Pipkins a.k.a. Jeghetto, was born in a small steel mill town called Clairton, PA located south of Pittsburgh, PA. He is a self taught artist and has been creating art from a very young age. As a teenager, he moved to the East Side of Pittsburgh and graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School. In the late 90’s Tarish joined the BridgeSpotters Collective and became known for his Live paintings and Poetry. He was also a Barber for over 20 years. He moved to North Carolina in 2005 where he launched his career in Puppetry. There, he fine tuned his skills by doing street performances with his puppets. In 2008 he started working with Paperhand Puppet Intervention. He has built puppets and performed in several Paperhand productions. Most recently, Jeghetto had the pleasure to work with national recording artist, Missy Elliott on her music video, WTF ( Where They From) controlling the Pharell puppet and doing some puppet building. He also worked on the Amazon Echo commercial featuring Missy Elliott and Alec Baldwin as puppets. Tarish is a former teacher at Just Right Academy, a private alternative school for children with special needs. Tarish is married and a proud father of five children. Jeghetto’s passion is promoting Oneness through the magic of Puppetry.

Monica Reyna Saavedra was born and raised in Lima – Peru and has a passion for acting and storytelling. She started acting at an early age in theater and school plays throughout her teenage years. As a young girl her father would take her to children’s plays and story time where she would listen to fables and fairy tales that captured her attention and triggered her imagination. She wanted to do the same thing for others and would gather her friends and retell the stories she had heard and memorized and it was not long before she was creating her own stories to share. When she moved to North Carolina now having children of her own, she wanted to share and expose her children to the wonder of escaping to another place and time through the magic of storytelling. So in 2009 she began working and performing in Charlotte, bringing bilingual storytelling and theater to the community. Over the years she has collaborated with many organizations and educational institutions such as the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Queens University of Charlotte, the Mint Museum, The El Quixote Festival and many others. In 2011 she started the Rocotita Show, an interactive show in English and Spanish that incorporates games, dance and music. Monica is a versatile artist that focuses on promoting bilingualism by introducing the audience to the Spanish language through storytelling and theatrical performances. In 2013 she was recognized by Art Si for her work and support to the Latino Arts. Wanting to fill the growing need in the community in 2017 she started Reyna Productions where she serves as its artistic director with the focus on developing young talent through storytelling and acting. Her most recent projects include plays such as: The Vagina Monologues (Spanish), Las Musas (The Muses), Los Zapaticos de Rosa (The Pink Shoes), Meñique (Little Finger), Pastorela Despacito a Belén (Pastorale Despacito to Bethlehem), and Serenata a Belén (Serenade to Bethlehem). Through Reyna Productions she has started to cultivate and create opportunities for the development of young actors and storytellers. One can often find her telling stories at festivals, conferences, schools, and libraries engaging with children and their personal chauffeurs too. Her most recent project – Classic Fables and Short Stories, connects children and their parents with popular universal favorites all while incorporating the Spanish language into the performance.
A minimalist, she brings all she needs in a small suitcase that is filled with simple props, relying on the power of the imagination and the story itself to transport the audience to whatever place, space or time she decides to take them.

Karen Lynch Harley
& Phillip Harley Karen Lynch Harley is a Native American Artist. She is a member of the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe of North Carolina. Her work is inspired by her love of life and culture and usually tells a story. She believes art is therapy for the body and soul and enjoys sharing her gift with others to help them find their inner gifts and spirit. She pulls from her own roots to create art in a variety of art mediums. Karen’s work has been received nationally and internationally.Her work has been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles regarding her art and devotion to teaching others how to release their creativity through art.Karen has recently completed several outdoor murals in Halifax County, North Carolina for the Ed Fitts Charitable Foundation; the Z Smith Reynolds Foundation and the University of Maryland, College Park Campus.Karen has also illustrated two story books. Phillip Harley is a self-taught wood carver who takes found wood and creates beautiful carvings on walking sticks, bowls, spoons, totem poles, benches and other items.
His works are done with both hand tools and chain saws. Phillip has worked on several commission pieces in North Carolina, Florida and Maryland and creates family heirlooms from wood given to him by customers.
His work reflects what he sees in life and his love of wood.

Kim and Wayne Pitts – Vista Tranquila Publishers
Wayne and Kim Pitts were both born and raised in Western North Carolina in the Appalachian Mountains and this is where they still call home. They met met in 1989 while studying abroad at the University of the Americas (UDLA) in Cholula, México. One year later, at the age of 20, they were married and shortly afterward they graduated from Western Carolina University, joined the Peace Corps and moved to Senegal. After their return, their two sons were born and they joined right in the adventure! They made friends, tried lots of exotic foods, and seen some amazing sights. As former University professors, they love learning and teaching, There’s a lot to their story and they look forward to sharing it. Vista Tranquila Publishers is their latest adventure and they hope you’ll join them along the way.

Jiménez was born in Mexico and was brought to the United States at 2 years old by her parents in hopes of a better life. She grew up in the public-school system and learned that the only way to unite with her family was by celebrating the union of her two cultures. Sabio is a self-taught painter, writer, and illustrator who has made her life mission to use her artwork to create awareness about the history and life experience of Garifuna and afro-descendant communities in the Americas. She has written and illustrated several children’s books and has done solo exhibitions in New York and Washington D.C. As a black woman herself, Isidra is very interested in capturing and highlighting the inner and outer strength of black women and girls and their vital role in the preservation of culture and their environment.
Isidra also holds a bachelor’s in engineering and Master of Science degree; she currently works in public health research studiesas Research Project Managerat a leading Medical School in North Carolina.

Osuba is a visual artist, cultural producer and storyteller. He loves to share memories and stories from his childhood and his beloved Puerto Rico.
He is the founder and director of El Quixote Festival- Festival Del Quijote (2015), an annual, seven month long collaborative festival across the state of North Carolina that commemorates the Spanish writer and literary giant Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra and the 400 years of “Don Quixote”, two books that changed his life.
He has worked to find creative ways, and places for the voices of Latinos and people of color to be heard, be seen and have a presence in his community.
He lives in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina with his wife of over 30 years Michelle.
