Ser Plantas | Being Plants
Plants are at the first level of every food chain. Autotrophs are usually plants or one-celled organisms. Scientists call them “producers” because they make their own food. Nearly all autotrophs use a process called photosynthesis to create “food” (a nutrient called glucose) from sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. In Indigenous America, Inti (the sun) is the god of life, the creator of photosynthesis. Cinema is another form of photosynthesis, a light that creates food for inspiration. NCLAFF 2023 will be honoring plants, as present in the everyday, in the landscape, and the economies that have had an important impact in the region (timber, rubber, sugar, banana, coca, etc.). Not all festival films will have plants as a theme, but every person lives within a landscape shaped, contained, and supported by them.

TRIO HUASTECO
Son huasteco is a string-based tradition that originates in the northeastern region of Mexico. Miguel, Santana, and Alejandro play son huasteco together as the Trio Huasteco in Durham, North Carolina, where they perform at festivals, quinceañeras, weddings, and other special occasions.
El son huasteco es una tradición de cuerdas que se origina en la región noreste de México. Miguel, Santana y Alejandro tocan son huasteco juntos como el Trío Huasteco en Durham, Carolina del Norte, donde actúan en festivales, quinceañeras, bodas y otras ocasiones especiales.
LETY ALVAREZ
Leticia Alvarez is a Mexican artist; she studied Art at the University of Monterrey (UDEM), and participated on numerous exhibitions. Leticia got a Master degree in Education through Art, from the University of Nuevo León. She got married and moved to the United States, where she got a scholarship at the University of Virginia Tech, and obtain a Master Degree in Latin American Studies, History and Literature. Her love for Mexico and her roots, where translated into art with different motives, first traditional Mexican toys, artesian, houses and even religious images are used to evoke the culture, traditions and memories that they represent. Leticia has collaborated with the NCMA as an art teacher for different events, as well as with ArtSpace and the COR museum where she has also created the altar for the Day of the Dead for the past many years. She lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband David Elizondo and her four kids, where she teaches Art in her studio.
Leticia Álvarez es una artista mexicana; Estudió Arte en la Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) y participó en numerosas exposiciones. Leticia obtuvo su título de Maestría en Educación a través del Arte, de la Universidad de Nuevo León. Se casó y se mudó a los Estados Unidos, donde obtuvo una beca en la Universidad de Virginia Tech y obtuvo una Maestría en Estudios, Historia y Literatura Latinoamericana. Su amor por México y sus raíces, fueron plasmados en arte con diferentes motivos, primero se utilizan juguetes tradicionales mexicanos, casas artesanales e incluso imágenes religiosas para evocar la cultura, tradiciones y recuerdos que representan. Leticia ha colaborado con el NCMA como profesora de arte para diferentes eventos, así como con ArtSpace y el museo COR donde también ha creado el altar para el Día de Muertos durante los últimos años. Vive en Raleigh, Carolina del Norte con su esposo David Elizondo y sus cuatro hijos, donde enseña arte en su estudio.

Author, Dreamer, and Artist, Carolina Fonseca Jimenez inspires her community through her children’s books and dream guidance. Her biggest treasure is her children’s book, Lupita and the Magic of Mexico which was turned into a play production through a magical partnership with Revista Latina and many community members.
La autora, soñadora y artista Carolina Fonseca Jiménez inspira a su comunidad a través de sus libros infantiles y su guía sobre los sueños. Su mayor tesoro es su libro infantil, Lupita y la Magia de México, que se convirtió en una obra de teatro gracias a una asociación mágica con Revista Latina y muchos miembros de la comunidad.

Orgullo y Alma Latina is a Folkloric Dance Group that thrives to proudly represent Mexican heritage.

CAROLINA CORONA
Una artista Veracruzana. Su trabajo es diverso, inspirado y personal. Refleja su cultura y sus colores y texturas. Su objetivo es compartir su historia y el amor por las tradiciones Mexicanas con las que crecío. Tambien comparte un mensaje ambiental. Su meta es llamar atención a la destrucción de la naturaleza y al cambio climatico y como estos problemas afectan nuestras vidas y los ecosistemas naturales.
A Veracruz artist. Her work is diverse, inspired and personal. She reflects her culture and her colors and textures. Her goal is to share her story and her love for the Mexican traditions she grew up with. She also shares an environmental message. Her goal is to call attention to the destruction of nature and climate change and how these problems affect our lives and natural ecosystems.

originaria de San Pablito, Puebla México orgullosamente indigena Otomi y es artesana de la chaquira y el papel amate (papel organico) en su vestimenta con colores vivos en la cual representa muy bien a la mujer otomi… su blusa es hecha a mano con chaquira de artesanas otomies con tela de popelina blanca, la falda larga artesanal hecho de lana, la faja roja artesanal hecho de lana, Quexquéme o conocido tambien como Quexquémilt que tiene arriba de su cabeza es una prenda compuesta por 2 rectangulos del mismo tamaño con bordados de hilo grueso realizado en forma de cruz dandole forma a sus dibujos de flores y en el tono rojo hecho de lana y su liston azul, por ultimo la canasta que es un hermoso accessorio…
Magali Santos originally from San Pablito, Puebla Mexico, proudly Otomi indigenous and is an artisan of the beads and amate paper (organic paper) in her brightly colored clothing in which she represents the Otomi woman very well… her blouse is handmade with beads from Otomies artisans with white poplin fabric, the long handmade skirt is made of wool, the red handmade sash is also made of wool, Quexquéme or also known as Quexquémilt that she has on top of her head is a garment composed of 2 rectangles of the same size with thick thread embroidery made in the shape of a cross giving shape to its flower drawings and in the red tone made of wool and its blue ribbon, finally the basket which is a beautiful accessory…

Luisito is the main character in Rafael A. Osuba’s book – Luisito Celebrates Three Kings’ Day and he loves hot chocolate.
Luisito es el personaje principal del libro de Rafael A. Osuba – Luisito celebra el día de Reyes y a Luisito le encanta el chocolate caliente.
CHOCOLATADA – (CHO-CO-LA-TA-DAH)
A “chocolatada” is a social event in which chocolate, (in this case hot chocolate) becomes the reason for the meeting. It is usually a festive meeting with a commemorative or celebration character. In this case Luisito celebrates Three Kings’ Day and his favorite drink is hot chocolate.

Luisto loves going to Abuelita’s house because on cold days she prepares “leche con chocolate caliente”! He loves hot cocoa!
Especially the way his Abuelita makes it! She takes a block of hard bittersweet chocolate, she says it is “Comida de Los Dioses”, Food of the Gods.
Abuelita tells him that chocolate has wonderful powers, they break it up into little pieces, melt it, then add sugar and hot milk, sometimes cinnamon.
However, this day was even more special for this day they would prepare for the arrival of Los Tres Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men.
¡A Luisito le encanta ir a la casa de su abuelita, porque en los días fríos ella le prepara leche con chocolate caliente! ¡A Luisito le encanta el chocolate caliente! ¡Especialmente de la forma en que su abuelita lo hace! Toma un bloque duro, de sabor agridulce, Teobroma, que significa “comida de Los Dioses “. Abuelita le dice que el chocolate tiene poderes maravillosos. Lo rompe en pedacitos que muele, derrite, y luego les agrega leche caliente, azúcar y, a veces, canela. Sin embargo, este día es aún más especial porque se preparan para la llegada de Los Tres Reyes Magos.

The Assembly proclaimed the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) after celebrating the Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019. Since its establishment, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII) of the United Nations has drawn attention to the critical situation of Indigenous Languages. As revitalizing Indigenous languages requires sustained efforts, The International Decade aims to draw attention to the critical loss of Indigenous languages and the urgent need to preserve, revitalize, and promote Indigenous languages and take further urgent steps for their conservation and revitalization. After the call made in Chiapas by the EZLN thirty years ago, a renewed interest in the lives and experiences of Indigenous peoples of the continent has emerged. This is a small effort to share the Indigenous languages of Latin America and the Caribbean, where most of that diversity is still alive via academic, documentary, and artistic forms. Join us to be immersed in multiple ways to see and experience the world because languages matter, as they are builders of worlds.
La Asamblea General de la ONU proclamó el Decenio Internacional de las Lenguas Indígenas (2022-2032), tras la celebración del año de las lenguas indígenas en 2019. Desde su creación, el Foro Permanente para las Cuestiones Indígenas (PFII) de Naciones Unidas ha llamado la atención sobre la Situación crítica de las Lenguas Indígenas. Dado que la revitalización de las lenguas indígenas requiere esfuerzos sostenidos, el Decenio Internacional tiene como objetivo llamar la atención sobre la pérdida crítica de las lenguas indígenas y la necesidad urgente de preservar, revitalizar y promover las lenguas indígenas y de tomar nuevas medidas urgentes para su conservación y revitalización. Luego del llamado hecho en Chiapas por el EZLN hace treinta años, ha surgido un renovado interés por las vidas y experiencias de los pueblos indígenas del continente. Este es un pequeño esfuerzo para compartir a través de formas académicas, documentales y artísticas lenguas indígenas de América Latina y el Caribe, donde la mayor parte de esa diversidad aún está viva. Únase a nosotros para sumergirse en múltiples formas de ver y experimentar el mundo, porque los idiomas importan, ya que son constructores de mundos.
