As part of the 8th Annual El Quixote Festival dedicated to Voces – Vwa – Voix – Voices of the Caribbean, we invite you to savor with us the words of a select group of poets from Puerto Rico, Haiti, Grenada, Cuba and Dominican Republic. We will gather on February 17 in honor of one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated poets: Julia de Burgos (PR).

Elisa Ramírez nació el 9 de diciembre de 1969, en la ciudad de Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Desde muy joven mostró interés por la literatura. A los 13 años, ganó su primer recital de poesía, en el “Foreign Language Festival” de la Universidad de Arkansas. Publicó su primer poemario para niños, “Los Angelitos de la Poeta”, en 2017 con la editorial Círculo Rojo en España. Su segundo un poemario, pero en esta ocasión para adultos, se tituló, Sentimientos acendrados, inmarcesibles. Este libro fue publicado en 2018 por la editorial LUDIKA de Puerto Rico. En ese mismo año también publica Ängelitos de la poeta en edición bilingüe nuevamente con la editorial Círculo Rojo en España. Ramírez publica su novela juvenil en inglés, “Lilly the brave”, la cual tiene además un cortometraje basado en la novela. El 2020 publica un cuento corto para niños titulado, “Elena y su Melena y el poemario “Ataraxia en el Conticinio’, el cual fue publicado en España, y el cual se publicó una segunda edición por la Editorial Zayas de Puerto Rico.(2021)
Elisa Ramírez ha incursionado como presentadora en programas televisivos del sello producciones Sir Williams Signature Universe. Entre los programas están, “Entre Musas y Letras por ABC5 y el programa West News Media que se transmite por Univisión Puerto Rico. Formó parte del elenco del cortometraje “Lilly la valiente” que se transmitió por ABC5 y Univisión Puerto Rico.
Perteneció a la escuela de Bellas Artes donde hizo su debut como actriz en varias obras de teatro. A lo largo de su carrera, trabajó como intérprete, traductora y maestra de inglés.
Sus poemas han sido traducidos al inglés, italiano, indonesio y al serbio; además formó parte de antologías provenientes de Indonesia, Serbia y los Estados Unidos. Elisa escribe artículos para la revista digital Mundo Warmi y participa semanalmente del programa radial Poetas del Viento ambos en Argentina. Elisa Ramírez fue nombrada Presidenta de la Unión Hispanomundial de Escritores y el canal Mil Mentes por México. Es embajadora cultural y literaria de Asih Sasami Indonesia Foundation, Embajadora Cultural de Mosaicos y Letras en Argentina y Embajadora de Grandes Poetas Argentina.
Elisa Ramírez was born on December 9, 1969, in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. From a very young age she showed interest in literature. At age 13, she won her first poetry recital, at the University of Arkansas Foreign Language Festival. She published her first collection of poems for children, “Los Angelitos de la Poeta”, in 2017 with the Círculo Rojo publishing house in Spain. La de ella, second of her, a collection of her poems, but this time for adults, it was titled, Feelings pure, unfading. This book was published in 2018 by the LUDIKA publishing house of Puerto Rico. In that same year she also published Ängelitos de la poeta in a bilingual edition again with the Círculo Rojo publishing house in Spain. Ramírez publishes her young adult novel in English, “Lilly the brave”, which also has a short film based on the novel. In 2020 she publishes a short story for children entitled, “Elena y la Melena de ella y el poetario“ Ataraxia en el Conticinio ‘, which was published in Spain, and which was published in a second edition by Editorial Zayas de Puerto Rico. She is the cultural and literary ambassador of the Asih Sasami Indonesia Foundation, Cultural Ambassador of Mosaics and Letters in Argentina and Ambassador of Great Poets Argentina.

Jacques Pierre was born in Cap-Haïtien on the northern coast of Haiti. He has been teaching Haitian Creole & culture since 2010 at Duke University where his classes include students from the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University by teleconference. In addition, since January 2022, he has been teaching Haitian Creole and Culture for Stanford University. Before his arrival at Duke, Jacques taught at Florida International University and at in the Creole Institute at Indiana University.
Jacques is an outspoken advocate for the use of Kreyòl at all levels in Haiti as a means of helping create a more inclusive society. His many articles include Kreyòl pale, Kreyòl ekri. Jacques has guided his students in producing a number of learning and sharing videos featured by the U.S. Department of Education Office of International and Foreign Language Education as invaluable tools for those wishing to sharpen their skills in Haitian Creole. He has also created an ingenious game called “Memonèt” Riddles to help those learning Haitian Creole sharpen their listening and understanding skills.
Jacques has been organizing the International Creole Day Celebration at Duke University since 2013 as well as The Haitian Film Series since 2012. Starting in October 2021, Jacques has been conducting a series of interviews in Kreyòl with several Creolists around the world (Trinidad and Tobago, Saint-Lucia, Seychelles, Ayiti, Mauritius). From the beginning of his career, Jacques has been asking the Creole world to viv an kreyòl.

Jacques Pierre nació en Cap-Haïtien en la costa norte de Haití. Ha estado enseñando criollo haitiano y cultura desde 2010 en la Universidad de Duke, donde sus clases incluyen a estudiantes de la Universidad de Virginia y la Universidad de Vanderbilt por teleconferencia. Jacques ha guiado a sus alumnos en la producción de una serie de videos de aprendizaje e intercambio presentados por la Oficina de Educación de Idiomas Extranjeros e Internacionales del Departamento de Educación de EE. También ha creado un ingenioso juego llamado “Memonèt” Riddles para ayudar a quienes aprenden criollo haitiano a mejorar sus habilidades de escucha y comprensión.
Jacques ha estado organizando la Celebración del Día Internacional del Creole en la Universidad de Duke desde 2013, así como The Haitian Film Series desde 2012. A partir de octubre de 2021, Jacques ha estado realizando una serie de entrevistas en kreyòl con varios criollos de todo el mundo (Trinidad y Tobago, Santa Lucía, Seychelles, Ayiti, Mauricio). Marlyn I. Rivera Navedo nació en Santurce, Puerto Rico. Culminó sus estudios de pedagogía (Bachillerato en Artes, (1988) y la Maestría en Currículo ( 2009). Maestra de vocación, amante de la historia, la cultura, las Bellas Artes y por supuesto, la literatura. Poeta y escritora de corazón, su lema es: “ESCRIBO CON EL ALMA”. Ha publicado los siguientes libros: Yo, naturaleza-2019, Cuando Puerto Rico se movió-2020- (Editorial Raíces Puerto Rico).

Marlyn I. Rivera Navedo was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. She completed her studies in pedagogy (Baccalaureate in Arts, (1988) and Master’s in Curriculum (2009). Vocation teacher, lover of history, culture, Fine Arts and of course, literature. Poet and writer at heart, her motto is: “I WRITE WITH THE SOUL.” She has published the following books: Yo, naturaleza-2019, Cuando Puerto Rico se movió-2020- (Editorial Raíces Puerto Rico).
Since 2021 she has self-published the following books: the story Ettevi la libélula- Ettevi the dragonfly (English / Spanish) La Niña del Turbante 2022- July (poem) and the most recent book of hers APRILLIS-Reflexiones nov. 2022.

Margaret Cox was born in Carriacou, Grenada. When she was five years old, her family migrated to Brooklyn, NY. She now lives in Georgia, where she is an Associate Professor of English at Savannah State University. Her volume of poetry Tales of Women speaks about the experiences of Caribbean women living in diaspora. In addition to writing poetry, she has created a documentary Zora and Janie of Eatonville based on Zora Neale Hurston and her acclaimed novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. She is currently working on a series of cinepoems.
Margaret Cox nació en Carriacou, Granada. Cuando tenía cinco años, su familia emigró a Brooklyn, NY. Ahora vive en Georgia, donde es profesora asociada de inglés en la Universidad Estatal de Savannah. Dr. Joan Francisco Valdés Santos, es igualmente artista y académico. Mientras que su educación formal es en los deportes/recreación, ciencia y la psicología, es también un prolífico escritor, compositor y periodista con una amplia gama de conocimientos y experiencia de la música, el arte, la literatura y la cultura cubana. Ha producido obras para varios programas de televisión en Cuba y su trabajo fue publicado en el Antología hispana panamericana de Ovanz, 2006. Nació en La Habana, Cuba. Recibió su doctorado del Instituto Superior de Cultura Física Manual Fajardo donde fue uno de los 46 miembro del Consejo Científico del INDER. Fue vice-rector de ISLA, Instituto Superior Latino Americano de Ajedrez y director de investigaciones. Actualmente vive en Carolina del Norte con su esposa y ha publicado dos volúmenes de poesía que se titula Donde Reina El amor y la esperanza, y Medicina del alma, 2012 con prensa de Souloworks. Dr. Joan Francisco Valdés Santos, is equally an artist and a scholar. While his formal education is in sports/recreation, science and psychology, he is also a prolific writer, composer and journalist, with a wide range of knowledge and experience in Cuban literature, music, art, and culture. He was born in Havana, Cuba and currently lives in Durham, NC. In 2005 he received his Doctorate from the Instituto Superior de Cultura Física Manual Fajardo in Cuba, where he was one of the 46 members of the Science Council of INDER, National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation. He has produced works for several radio and television programs in Cuba and his poetry was published in the Hispanic Pan-American Anthology of Ovanz, 2006. He has currently self published two series of love poems titled Donde Reina El Amor y La Esperanza/Where Love And Hope Rein, 2012, and Medicina del Alma/Medicine of the Soul 2014, Souloworks Press.

Gloria Maria Toro-Agrait
Getea es sueño y poesía. La otra es una caborrojeña llamada Gloria María Toro-Agrait, aprendiz de humana en constante evolución y búsqueda. Estudió Ingeniería Química en el Colegio de Mayagüez. Ha sido antologada y Contando con las manos es su primer trabajo de poesía en solitario.
Pertenece al Colectivo Literario en los Bordes y a la comunidad virtual Palabreadores. Es secretaria de la Unión Hispanomundial de Escritores y Mil Mentes por México.

She has been anthologized and Contando con las Manos is her first solo work of poetry.

Nació en la ciudad de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana.

Es Autora de la novela “Marcado por el destino”, de venta en Librería Cuesta, de República Dominicana, y de venta en eBook, por Amazon. Autora de la novela “El niño que quería ser grande”, y de otras obras como: “Ciudad Devastada”; “Tesis de Literatura”; “La Vida, Un poema sin fin y doce poemas de amor y superación;” “Entre la Vigilia y el sueño”; Poemario Místico: “Llévame contigo a tu alto aposento”, entre otras obras publicadas en Amazon, en papel y en digital.
Ha escrito decenas de poesías, cuentos, relatos, Micro relatos, Haikus, ensayos (algunos aún inéditos).

When she was still a teenager, she studied the art of Pyrography, at the “Emma Balaguer De Vallejo” Vocational School, with Professor Justo Hernández, Director of the Pyrography Art Gallery that bears the same name, from which she graduated with the most high honors, which is why she was interviewed on the program “El Gordo de la Semana”, which was broadcast on Radio Televisión Dominicana, on Channel 4.
She is the author of the novel “Marcado por el destinio”, sold at Librería Cuesta, in the Dominican Republic, and sold as an eBook, on Amazon. She is the author of the novel “The boy who wanted to be big”, and other works such as: “Devastated City”; “Thesis of Literature”; “Life, an endless poem and twelve poems of love and overcoming;” “Between Wakefulness and Dream”; Mystical Poems: “Take me with you to your upper room”, among other works published on Amazon, on paper and digitally.
