“This  is a special tribute to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright and the two books that have inspired millions and has changed my life”  I am not alone for others have come under its spell as well such as: Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Leo Tolstoy, Herman Melville, Gustave Flaubert, Franz Kafka, Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez, Picasso, Dali, Gustave Doré, Telemann, Strauss, Minkus, Dale Wasserman, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Coldplay, Cantinflas, Orson Welles, Terry Gilliam, Sigmund Freud and even the great Albert Einstein.
“I could not be happier with the response and help that we have received from a very diverse group of people, artists, organizations, educational institutions, businesses and civic groups.  Together we have put together something very special that I am very proud of with more than 150 days of programming.” “This very “Quixotic” project has captured the imagination of many in our community and reaffirms in true “Quijote” fashion what is possible when we choose to work together, collaborate and dare to Dream Big”

The I AM QUIXOTE – YO SOY QUIJOTE EXHIBIT, is a collaboration between Artist Studio Project and The Durham Arts Council.  The exhibit features paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, mixed media, mosaics, and software-generated works exploring themes from Don Quixote de la Mancha.

Our Story:

An open call went out across the state on January 1, 2015 through multiple platforms to include radio, television newsprint, social media, the El Quixote Festival website and electronic e-blasts.  Two promotional videos in Spanish and English featuring the “Don Quixote De La Mancha” mascot making the official call were also produced to promote the call and encourage participation. After six months of promoting and a one month extension we are very proud of the multi-media selection of works by 32 diverse artists from across North Carolina that the call has generated.

This exhibit forms part of the EL QUIXOTE FESTIVAL, which celebrates the 400 Year Anniversary of "El Quijote" a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra two parts; “El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha” 1605 & “El Ingenioso Caballero Don Quijote de la Mancha”1615, while placing a special emphasis on artistic creations of local and international artists.

Genres such as visual arts, literature, opera, music, dance, theatre, film, gastronomy along with various academic events are part of the seventh month long festival (September 29, 2015, April 23, 2016).

Additional goals are to broaden the artistic landscape in North Carolina, reach new and more diverse audiences, to build relationships, share knowledge, learn and build consensus.

Special Thanks To: Maragaret DeMott, Miguel Rojas-Sotelo, Cornelio Campos, Viktor Hernandez, Miguel Chirinos, Jorge Lozada, Alonso Miguel Rodriguez, Donovan Zimmerman, Michelle Osuba, Rafael Osuba Jr., Gabrielle Kahela-Osuba, Leilani Kahela-Osuba, Luisa and Jaime Figueroa, all of the artists that took the time to answer the call and submit their works and all that have helped in any way to make these events possible.

CREATE YOUR OWN REALITY
"I choose to create my own reality, if that makes me delusional or mad so be it.
Just because others are unable to visualize what you can clearly see does not make it fantasy; for you have the power to decide through which lens to see your world." Rafael A. Osuba ©2015
